No word has been said about SD2SNES supporting the Super FX and SA1. The only thing I've heard is the SD2SNES's FPGA is unlikely to have enough gate arrays to do either of them. The Super FX is a graphics accelerator, the SA1 is a custom 65816 CPU clocked at 10.74MHz. That's quite a bit different from the SDD-1 decompression chip and the DSP used in Super Mario Kart.

Yeah but N64 is a unique exception in emulation. Even fan hackers seldom do anything that is real hardware compatible (see all the Mario 64 hacks). It's relatively easy to depend on the emulator for things like graphics packs.

Compare this with Nintendo's Donkey Kong Original Edition, which adds back the Pie Factory. The ROM itself was edited, upping the mapper from NROM to CNROM with an increase in CHR ROM data. Was the game cleanly hacked? No, the ROM is a kludged mess, but it's still a direct hack applied to the ROM itself.

They also hacked some games to use an alternate mapper for the eReader. I remember reading that Urban Champion or something had a mapper change due to the eReader NES emulator's limited mapper support. Of course, there have been countless little hacks, like updating copyright dates, fixing typos, removing problematic text ("Yo-Yo" in StarTropics). Another N64 example is Ocarina of Time Master Quest. Assuming that all the Master Quest's expected differences were already a part of the N64 ROM they started with, they also switched the color of the A/B buttons to correspond with the GC controller, made a kludgy link to an FMV during the end credits that crashes on real hardware, and made a hook for the emulator to change resolution between the pause menu and the game play. Of course, they also updated text ("Z-Targeting" became "L-Targeting" among many other things). I wish they had also made a hook for the Rumble Pak to work with the GC's force feedback so that the Stone of Agony item actually worked.
