Ico. I realized how it was supposed to be pronounced when I heard that the codename for Shadow of the Colossus during early production was "Nico," with "Ni" being Japanese for the number two (pronounced like the word knee). I recall asking for it at a GameStop in San Diego circa 2009 and the employee tried to correct me by calling it "Eye-koh."
SMH. If you don't KNOW, then what makes you think you are correct and be so sure that you would attempt to correct me? I hope he didn't see me roll my eyes and then decide to tell me they didn't have it just because of that (their online inventory tracker said they had it).
About a decade after Super Smash Bros Melee launched, I realized that my nephew and all his friends called it "Me-Lee" instead of "
May-Lay. They were huge fans and had been playing for years and years. I guess the combination of the announcer's Japanese accent and him screaming it was enough that they didn't catch the correct pronunciation from the game itself but surely, I thought, they had heard the word in other contexts before.
I mentioned ranged versus melee weapons and they said that they had never heard that terminology before. I pointed out that they even said it in the tutorial to Unreal Tournament but my nephew was so young back then that he couldn't remember. I'm sure he hears/notices it every other day now.
I chuckled when M'F'er Mike and AVGN asked each other why Lake Hylia is pronounced "Lake Hill-E-uh" and Hyrule is pronounced "Hi-Rule." I was screaming at my monitor "because you've been saying it wrong all along, genius!"
In a much earlier video he said that repeatedly and also called the Skulltulas "Skull-Tull-Uhs." Uhh, they are spider-like and their name is clearly supposed to look/sound like tarantula (Tah-Rant-Chu-Luh).
The Tengen thread got me thinking, there have been a lot of games titles and game manufacturers that I have heard people pronounce many different ways. What are some of the titles that you said the wrong way forever and then heard someone pronounce it correctly.
For me I hear this with games like Chrono Trigger...and Secret of Mana. I hve heard many people say "Chrono" differently...and "Mana."
I have heard people say "Taito" many ways.
What other titles have this issue and what is the right way to say them!!!???
If this has been discussed already besides in the Tengen thread, sorry I couldnt find it.
Chrono Trigger can go either way because the same root word sounds different in words like Chronograph or Chronological and it still refers to time either way.
I've heard Taito enough times in old arcade games that I know how to say it, but if I always trusted stuff like that then I would call Hudson Soft "Hud-Doh-Sin," since that's how they say it in their native Japanese commercials (guess they say it wrong just because of the way they read/write).
The PC Engine Super CD-ROM^2 (squared) is actually called "See-you-pa Shee-Dee Rome-oo Rome-oo" for the same reason. Every consonant is paired with a vowel sound in the written language leading them to have extra sounds for syllables that end in a consonant. This makes it sound funny when someone reads it with those extra sounds.
Well most of the companies, character names and game franchises everyone is taking about here are Japanese so its gonna be pronounced with Japanese phonetics.
Faxanadu is a good one. Fah-zanadoo vs. Fax-anado. I think both are fine. I doubt many people called it "Fah-zanadoo" back in the day.
Ys: I say "eece" like in fleece. I've heard "Eeze" too.
I always pronounced faxanadu with a silent fa, so like zan-uh-doo. But i think thats because ive heard that word alot in new jersey news as it was the name for the largest mall complex that was to ever be built, or some such nonsense, that ended up stalling and was never completed.
While I recognoize that "chronometer" is said with "ah" sounds for the o's, I have a hard time imagining anyone saying the Greek titan Chronos' name with anything other than "oh" sounds.

I spelled it like that as in how you pronounce crow, the bird. so yeah, the "oh" sound

Wheres The D Come From??
Indeed.

American NES collectors ALWAYS mispronounce
- The Legend of Kage
you guys pronounce it as "Cage"
while it actually reads "Ka-gay" which in japanese means "Shadow"
hence the Samurai character.....
That pronunciation isn't right either. The "ge" is more like the "ge" in "get" than "gay". You can hear it in this video (skip to 1:22):
Also, you play as a ninja in The Legend of Kage, not a samurai.
Not "Nintendoo"
I swear everyone says Ikaruga differently. I always say i(f) ca(r) ru(ne) gu(t), and usually get corrected. Always in a different way.
I don’t think I’ve heard it pronounced, but my exposure to other things from Japan tells me it should be “Eee” “kuh” “rue” “guh.”
I've heard it as:
Poke-eee-mon
Poke-uh-mon
Poke-eee-man
Poh-kay-mon
I personally say poke-uh-mon but I think the official way is poh-kay-mon?
Street fighter had a couple in the game
Ryu should be pronounced (Roo)
Tulpa got this one right. There are actually two syllables, but it’s really fast and difficult to tell.
Ree-yue.
Infogrames
I always say "info games" in my head. Although, that's not so much because I don't know how to say it correctly, but because I simply hate that name.
I sometimes think “Infrogames” and then I catch myself.
Pokemon takes the crown for the game I've heard pronounced differently the most.
I've heard it as:
Poke-eee-mon
Poke-uh-mon
Poke-eee-man
Poh-kay-mon
I personally say poke-uh-mon but I think the official way is poh-kay-mon?
I say Poke-uh-mon, because i'm a lazy caucasian, but Poke-ay-mon is the proper way, if the cartoon taught me anything.
About a decade after Super Smash Bros Melee launched, I realized that my nephew and all his friends called it "Me-Lee" instead of "
May-Lay.
I've always said may lay and it bugs the crap out of me when people say it me Lee
It was a joke about how Americans say Zee and Canadians say Zed for the letter "Z"
I'm going to recline in my Lay-Zed-Boy, put on some Jay Zed, and play some Zee Ecks Spectrum games.

thats Zed Ecks Spectrum. Always cheque your spelling

Ninja Gaiden (I know this one was already said, but I too had mispronounced it for a long time)
Magic of Scheherazade (same here)
Illusion of Gaia
Okami (if it wasn't actually pronounced in the game, I wouldn't have known this one)
Persona (same as Okami)
This is when having voices in the game really helps. It's not just with game titles, but also with in-game names as well.
Is it "Soo-E-Ko-Den" or "Swee-Ko-Den" or "???"
Crow-no
While I recognoize that "chronometer" is said with "ah" sounds for the o's, I have a hard time imagining anyone saying the Greek titan Chronos' name with anything other than "oh" sounds.
What about Suikoden?
Is it "Soo-E-Ko-Den" or "Swee-Ko-Den" or "???"
I always heard people say "soo-ko-den".
The "i" was completely ignored.
Crow-no

Is it "Soo-E-Ko-Den" or "Swee-Ko-Den" or "???"
I had always call it "sway ko den", but that is by throwing Chinese phonetic rules into a Japanese word, quite poor.
Another thing that people mispronounce is KHAN games. It's "Kay-Han", not "Con"

i know what it sounds like, just didn't know how to type it out in words, so i went with the "Gay" part...
as for the character being a ninja, we never got that game, so i wouldn't have known either way.....
