Hold onto it. That is precious.

You know, if you don't mind.... why did you get rid of your childhood games? Your current collection is kind of prolific. Why did you get rid of your games initially?

Cause I was a dumb kid? I don't really know that I could adequately explain at 35 the motivations of my ~10 year old self for doing...anything he did.
  • I honestly can't think of a single piece of gaming collectible that I wouldn't sell.

Talk to me from 2009-2014, and I'd have a much different answer for you.
  • Give me the current market value for all of the video game stuff I own and I'm good to go. I wouldn't let go of my childhood consoles for the current rate but offer me 2-3 times that and I would do it.

I would probably re-invest the money into more niece sets than an entire console set. but at the moment i'm too lazy to move this stuff on
  • if I had to sell my entire collection for any reason,I would still keep these 4 items "forever":

  • I'm strongly attached to my copy of Snatcher. Not because it's rare. But I freaking love that game. I bought it before I had a Sega Cd to play it on. Even if I had to sell it, I would instantly have sellers remorse and buy another copy.

Yep, pretty much.   A more realistic thread would be "how much would it take to pry your "never sellable" stuff out of your collection?

I have 2 games I treasure very much that my Dad got for me for my 17th birthday.   If somebody offered me a grand a piece, I wouldn't take it.

If somebody offered me ten grand each, I'd take it, show my Dad, and we'd both laugh our asses off.

  • The thing I wouldn't sell is my first misprint my marvel vs Capcom 2 on a on a Midway arcade greatest hits vol 1 disc
  • my NES that I got for xmas back in 88.
  • definitely my sealed non-variant Mega Man 6

This is one in the thread that I feel will be put to the test. Expect very large offers in your future. No one is offering stupid money people's childhood favorite commons. Impossible to find, popular series interesting variant, sealed? For sure, big money being thrown around./

he has already received many huge offers I'm sure
  • I don't sell anything because I don't know how and money goes but items don't. It seems like replacements usually cost more. Not true for everything, but I have a lot of out of print music that seems to cost way more now than when I got it. Same for books. Some video games are still cheap but most prices seem to go up not down.

So "any price" sure I'd sell but "price I can actually get" I don't bother.

a few when I first got it, but people seem to know I'm a serious collector and that I'm not going to sell. that, and it isn't a well known piece. no one seems to be hyped for it for a full set, and I'm not going to push the issue

  • My SNES and Earthbound
  • My Super Famicom 20 in 1 multicart from Korea.

^ It's a bit rare for a pirate cart, it houses NES games to be played on SNES. It uses the Super Pang Bros. (Super Buster Bros.) sounds iicr. I've still got one CIB, and there were so many people in the past asking if they could buy it from me, and the answer is always "no".

Same goes with my NES Star Keeper.
  • I'm collecting Game Boy games. I thought my childhod GB carts were priceless, until I noticed one day that I had swapped some of those childhood carts out for better-condition duplicates. Since my memory is the thing that puts extra value on those carts, and that memory failed me when I switched them out, no harm done! I need my memory to let go of my childhood Harvest Moon and Earthbound carts so that I can put the cash into my Game Boy collection! Also:

That... that prototype says USA on it. You have... Triumph. For Game Boy. How much do you want for it. I'll pay anything.

I kid, but I'm super jelly. Wow.
  • Nothing. I would sell everything for the right price. Honestly, I'd look forward to getting rid of about 1/2 of my collection if someone was willing to pay a bulk retail price (which I know is not realistic). There are a few things I'd miss, but the older I get I am less attached to personal belongings.

  • I own a triumph prototype too.  Mine is a full year before yours though.  1990

  • Nah I'd pretty much sell anything for the right price.
  • Ah yes, I found an Assemblergames thread with both of you in it, talking about these prototypes. At least I think it's you, it's adler_0 and someone showing the same photos as Intangir. You guys are lucky. Ok, no more thread hijacking.
  • I have many items that I'd be uncomfortable selling. However, in the right context I've sold these sorts of things in the past to buy other items.

    one last hijacking

    yeah,thats me

    Intangir(nintendoage) = Sporefrog08(assemblergames)

the reason why I posted Triumph here in the "not for sale" thread is not the rom itself, its the original Hudson cartridge with the original eprom used by Hudson.

its origin is verified(I posted its history at assembler in 2 threads) so this is not just a random eprom used on a random cartridge without any evidence of origin like many other protos, this one comes directly from Hudson and thats the reason why I would never give this piece of Hudson Soft videogame history away.

its not the only known Triumph proto out there but its the only known verified original Triumph proto.

the Triumph poster/flyer is also the real deal and its also the only known remaining (original) copy in existence.this was the pre-owner:

    thread hijacking end

Same for me.  I don't own anything truly priceless.

  • Honestly, I wouldn't sell most of my collection. My sister broke our NES and threw out all the games we had in the early 2000s when she moved out, so those are gone forever. I have a lot of sentimental value attached to all of the systems/games I bought when they were current, aside from the last/current generation (PS3, 360, XBone, PS4, WiiU). I could part with pretty much anything I bought secondhand, but for the most part anything I bought new prior to 2012 I would not sell.

Also I would not sell any of my Zelda games or any games that have a lot of time put into their save files, like my 3DS games.

I don't think many people here are truly considering the gravity of the phrase "any price". I think some might be thinking more along the lines of "what is absolutely not for sale". A friend of mine in Vancouver has 2 complete Earthbound big boxes that we were talking about one time, and I told him that someone here had a WTB thread up for a copy, and that he could probably make some pretty nice cash (considering what this member was willing to pay and considering the US to Canadian exchange rate) by selling one of them. He immediately shot it down telling me that neither copy is for sale at all and that we wasn't even entertaining offers. He was practically interrupting me to shoot the idea of selling down faster.

He didn't even let me get half the question out before slamming the door shut on the idea, so I decided to mess with him a bit   I asked once more "so, abso-friggin-lutely not for sale?"

    "Nope, absolutely not."

"Ok, no problem, I won't mention it to him.....someone's going to make some good cash though, this guy is offering $3,500 US for a complete big box with mint scratch n' sniff card...that's like 5 grand CAD! I know you mentioned one of yours included a brand new scratch n' sniff.. but it's all good man he'll find a seller...."

You can guess what happened next lol. Suddenly the priceless game had a price

Got a nice shot in the arm when he found out I was just messing with him lol

    This.

The only exception being my original front loader. I've had that thing for almost thirty years and it's still my primary system.
  • The memories are what has value to me. I collect this crap because I like it, but if someone with more dollars than sense offered me many times the going value, I'd part with anything I own. Even if they stipulated I could never buy another one, I'd still sell - I don't need to look at or have things to remember what made them special in the first place.

Besides, if a friend "gave" me whatever I was missing after I overpaid them to buy me dinner one night, I didn't "buy" back what I sold
  • All nostalgic items here. Just the ones I can think of off of the top of my head. I'm hugely sentimental...
