Does anyone else think there might be enough SNES classics?

I think it's possible, and here's why:
  1. Walmart is canceling preorders for customers who ordered more than one. I had my extra order canceled today.
  2. France's initial shipments will be double what the NES Classic was during its entire production run.
  3. Nintendo promised substantially more SNES units than NES units
  4. I feel like there's generally more love for NES than SNES
  5. I made a wish upon a star last night
The NES Classic release was a fiasco and Nintendo caught a lot of flak because of it. There's already a lot of bad press regarding the SNES preorder shit show. There's still time for Nintendo to make production adjustments.

Isn't it possible that there'll be enough for everybody?

  • Yes. I have said so all along.

They will also ship for 3 months after release, through 2017. Especially if retailers limit one per customer.

They might be rare at launch, but patience will be rewarded.

Also nothing will give me more satisfaction than watching scalpers firesale all their "extra" units once there is no demand for them.

the only thing that crashed all the presales was the sheer amount of bots from scalpers. That might have worked for presales, but scalpers will not be able to stay on top of brick and mortar stores with continuing replenishing of physical stock (if nintendo stays true to their promises)

The bold part I've added is important. Sold out preorders does NOT mean you can't get one. You will still need to camp. But I'm confident you will be able to walk in on release day and grab one off the shelf. Its much easier to stop people from buying ten when you limit one per customer in the store,  or I'm just too optimistic.

  • Nope, it's all a scam. It'll be harder to get because more people love SNES vs NES despite what this forum may think (this forum is more focused on NES). Nintendo is bullshitting us on what their production run will be and based on their crappy past history I don't trust them at all. I hate being pessimistic but this IS Nintendo we are talking about here, let us not forget that.
  • I think it will be just as hard to get as the NES Mini.
  • I don't know, you'd think by 6 months the Switch would be fully stocked in stores too...

Thats more a supply chain issue, with having to fight over components against one of the largest companies in the world, apple.

  • All I know is that I won't be buying one either way.
  • Fawk resellers, go eat a bag of dicks.

But yeah I have a feeling it'll be better this time around.
  • I think they will be a pain in the butt to get. I don't think demand is lower than the NES Classic, especially with it being the official release of Star Fox 2, and it's the target of every scalper on planet Earth. The NES sold 2 million and somehow people are still paying $200 for them, not just a few bucks over retail.

Will they be worth anything in 5 years? No. I think it will be another NES Classic situation this year though.
  • I think there will be a lot more units then the nes classic but i dunno if all the demand will be met. My guess is 4 million units, before the year is up and last i heard the nes classic was at 2 something million.
  • Nobody is saying demand is going to be lower. Demand it's going to be the same if not higher. The question is will Nintendo be able to supply the demand.

Honestly I was thinking demand might be less than it was for the NES Classic.

I've been wrong before though. Once.

  • I feel there will be more. It's a bloody novelty product to a purist like myself. I literally played the NES classic for a half hour and tossed it aside. I could sense the lag and just couldn't stomach playing NES on a non-CRT monitor. Drove me bloody bonkers.

    BONKERS!!!!
  • No, because even if there were, the NES classic has proven that resale value will be above retail price at release. So people who don't even want it will want to flip it based on history. Sort of like how each LRG release sells out faster and faster as they've proven to have higher resales. Same happens here, even if SNES output was increased.

Im hardcore nes biased and think the demand will be higher just due to the quality and depth that the snes clssic has over the nes. The caliber of games is just better.
  • I am hoping for 5-6 million units, i think that would be enough. I honestly do not see it being much more demand past that, i hate to say it but in my opinion more people would be satisfied with snes classic games on the Switch.
  • agreed. The NES line up was fantastic but this is an all star line up and then with an unreleased game too. People will go apeshit.

They will still be hard to find at release. But if nintendo does what they say they are and let them stream in for 3 months, there is no way scalpers will continuously be able to snatch up physical copies to keep supply low. Having a bunch of bots do the work is way easier than having people physically wait in line at a store (assuming stores limit one per customer).

in a wednesday in early december no one will be waiting outside target camped to get one.

but again this all hinges on nintendo constantly shipping units, so if that doesnt happen then scalpers and resellers will profit, not nintendo.
  • If you are so sure there will be enough then why make multiple pre orders?

    1. People getting preorders canceled/delayed does not fill me with confidence. If anything it says retailers overpromised on pre-orders and are going to have less so they have to cancel pre-orders to free up inventory.

    2. Good for France? Maybe I can order one from there.

    3. 10,000 more? 100,000 more? Unless we are talking in the millions it won't be enough to meet demand.

    4. Popular SNES games are more expensive NES games. There is not less love. If anything having stuff like Earthbound and Starfox 2 raises demand.

Nintendo doesn't care about bad press. They pulled this with Amiibos and the NES classic and Switch and fanboys still throw money at them.

I think points 2 and 3 are promising indicators.

Nintendo said "substantially" more. France is getting double what they got for the NES Classic. And that's just initial shipments. It's possible Nintendo will ship throughout the rest of the year.

  • They might be making more this time around, but I think the demand will be higher this time around as well.

  • I don't trust Nintendo's evaluation of "significant." Statistical significance varies greatly from actual impact. Nintendo could double the number of produced units and still not meet demand.
  • I've been saying from the beginning and will continue to say that they will not be that difficult to get. Some people may not have been able to get one on pre-order, and some may not be able to get one on launch day, but anyone who wants one will have one by the end of the year without having to pay scalper prices.

In other words, I see no difference in SNES Classic availability as compared to Switch availability in the first 6 months of its life.

Well a press release and a stats class are two different things.   Statistical significance is not the only definition of significance, so they are perfectly accurate to say 'significant' even if not statistically so..

  • It's gone. Amazon France sold out in 18 mins lol
  • SNES sux. They'll be $20 a piece in bargain bins by tomorrow.

Right.  They are technically accurate.  I probably stated it poorly, but I do not believe Nintendo's definition of 'significant' will match the definition of all the people that would want to purchase one.  I understand the reasons to leave it purposely vague on Nintendo's behalf, but it doesn't make not getting one any less disappointing, especially when 'significantly' more were promised.
  • People in this thread are sure putting a lot of faith in Nintendo's ability to meet demand...
