Unfinished Greg Martin Pacman cover

This is is a full size piece and not the usual prelim or rough. This was clearly meant to have been the final but something went wrong. I'm unsure why it was never completed.

Just realized that the paste ups are there to be removed. He would paint the background over spaces where characters would be and then remove those pastups and paint in the ghost, pacman hand or power pellet.

  • Well, send it over and I'll finish it up. Don't get mad when its circulating as an original - I can do this while I am adding the basketball to RapJam
  • Yeah the paste ups are masks. Meant to be sprayed over and then removed to create a hard edge. Really cool piece for visualizing process
  • That's neat. I remember you showing me this one. I meant to ask how many like this you have and was this one stopped due to an error that maybe we wouldn't notice??
  • That's the only one I've ever seen that's unfinished like that.

Greg Martin did sometimes get bugged by stuff that would bother no one else and would just start fresh.

That happened here, on a GB ad, even flintstones 2 he said he did a complete final version with a pink sky (sunset or dawn, not sure) except that was a little different I think as I think the client wanted a blue sky in the end. I wish there was a picture of that Pink Sky version of f2 , or that the original was around.
  • I find it fascinating that this stuff is still obtainable in 2017. What are the chances that the original NES Battletoads artwork is out there somewhere?
  • Poor. There is some battletoads art out there, but that one has never been found. 90% of them aren't available (corporate owned, destroyed, whatever). There are a few gems out there though.

I'd agree that this one is unique. The only other I can think of right now is an unfinished Atari Swordquest Airword cover but the game was canceled it is nowhere near this level of incompletion. Also exmples like the Atari Home Run cover that which was completed but not turned in because the artist had a problem with it. Neither one of those is close to the results we see here. It is rare to even see a picture of a painting in an incomplete state. There is nothing else that I can think of that is on this scale and was left so unfinished.

The Crazy Horse memorial in South Dakota. Now that thing needs completed. :-)
  • This is great! Thanks for posting it. Reminds me of the Frazetta piece I stumbled into. There is something special about seeing a piece frozen smack dab in the middle of the process.
