California Raisins Capcom Nintendo Nes Box Art Cover Painting plus Prototype & more

Ever since I knew the prototype of the Raisins was found, I wanted it. Here is the original history of the proto http://www.nintendoplayer.com/unreleased/california-raisins/. Anyway, I waited about 10 years and finally located the owner who was kind enough to sell it to me. I then wanted anything else that had to do with Raisins release. Eventually, the Raisins artwork became available forsale, so I bought the preliminary art and the final art. Anyway, having the prototype and the original artwork makes the Nes Raisins more real to me. Granted the game isn't the greatest but I enjoy it for what it is. In my opinion, had the Raisins been released, the box art would have been one of the better ones for the Nes. Thanks to those who helped me obtain all of this!!

  • Awesome stuff! Glad to see that raisins Prototype in a good home
  • You've got pretty much all the pieces that would come together to create the release, on a game that was never released. Fascinating stuff for sure

  • It all looks great Jeremy. The frame job is choice.

Thanks Curtis!! The frame job is choice because of your help!! Isn't it funny, Dan posted Wacky Man and I posted Raisins on the same night haha. I hadn't even checked Nintendoage before I posted. What are the odds two unreleased covers get posted the same night by different people.
  • Jeremy, congrats, the painting looks awesome framed and with the prelim and the proto what a package! I'm really happy you were able to get your grail   Huge congrats!!

I went in and posted the pic you sent me per your request into the body of the original post.
  • Amazing!! Congrats on the find!!
  • The colors look great. Really nice frame job on that one.
  • I can't get over how good that looks. You need to take my pictures from now on as well.
  • Hold on. Wikipedia says this was developed by Radiance and was going to be published by Capcom.. I guess it's true if http://www.lostlevels.org/200308/200308-raisins.shtml is true... But originally, Beam Software / Melbourne House was asked to develop the game (I assume it was an NES version.) Weird stuff.
  • The second photo-- what is that exactly? A reprint of the cover and an affixed screen print/mask, prepping the title to be integrated into the cover art?

I find this post to be truly fascinating. When I was a kid, I had Yo! Noid. It was a decent game and I think it has a small pool of fans, myself included. I'd have no clue how to track down stuff like this for niche games, but this is something I'd like to do for Yo! Noid.

What I appreciate most is that this isn't a super well known game. I know this was an unreleased game, but still, even if it was released I doubt it would have been a classic. Having all of the material for production release of a game, even if it were dude, is probably about the coolest thing I've seen on here, possibly even beating out the "Gold Master" source code that someone found for StarCraft early this year.

    yeah that's Photoshop before Photoshop

That's how they figured out the placement for the title, pretty spot on with your assumption

Yeah, I mean, I'm 36 years old (for context) and the older that I get living in this "digital age", the more I am impressed with history. There are so many things that were done, pre-1995 or so that I have no clue how they did it.  I mean... I know it's just a quick Google search but it amazes me that they could churn out such quality "magazines" month after month for every topic imaginable, all without PhotoShop and publisher software.  Then there's engineering in general.  I use to work for an engineering company and by the time I arrived, everyone had been using CAD for 10 years.  Still, they supported products that were 20+ years old and had to maintain records for even longer periods of time because we worked in the medical industry.

I have no clue how people went from mechanical drawings, to prototype to manufacturing and this stuff was often designed with "precision" but without computers.  Analog amazes me, and I think that's a part of what speaks to me about this collection.
  • Wow, now that is an epic painting, not to mention all of the pieces that go along with it. Congrats!

The second picture is a hand painted preliminary painting before the final was completed. Greg Winters the artist for the Raisins art was one of the only artist to do prelims like this. From what I've learned maybe 5% of box art had a prelim? https://imgur.com/a/yIPat

You had hoped I would do a post and I finally did. I'm happy to share the Raisins art and everything else because what's the enjoyment of just a few people ever seeing it? Anyway, thanks for the compliment!!! I feel the picture still doesn't do the painting justice but it's much better than what I had originally posted.
  • Man that is crazy. I love that art work so much. I was always a fan of the raisins growing up.

It was hard t give up but clearly it has gone to the right home where it will be appreciated the most.

Again love the frame work !

    It presents itself nicely.

  • Absolutely amazing stuff. Thanks for sharing!

If I can clarify, painted prelims are rare as the artist usually went from drawing to final painting.

RLH, it would be easier to get in person as that painted prelim is about 8 inches and a slightly different scene.    The framed painting is 20 inches and with the frame more like 30.     The 8 inch one is basically a rough draft to work out what the colours should look like.   My guess is that since there was so much purple in the painting, he wanted to see if that would work out, so he did a trial run.   I would guess he made that central figure green grapes instead of red because there was no other opportunity for color contrast with all the purple.

I'm positive I read an interview by someone who worked at Capcom that said the quality of gameplay played a role. I think it kept being pushed back in favor of other games. However, there supposedly were preorders taken and from an article I read, it said "a healthy amount of preorders were taken." Who knows. There are games that's are far worse that have been released. Gilligan's Island, Hook and there are more. It was probably mainly due to Capcom having so many game options to choose from that the Raisins kept being pushed back. If it was going to be released by another company then it probably would have been.
  • How complete is the ROM anyway? Maybe ill give it a try
  • That is a beauty of a piece for sure! Congrats on being able to acquire them all and for sharing with us!
  • Here is some history of this particular prototype cartridge

    http://www.nintendoplayer.com/unreleased/california-raisins/
  • The art is so good. It's funny that the other anthropomorphic fruit game, Princess Tomato, has the weird claymation cover and this gets a detailed illustration.

. There are some glitches but it seems pretty much complete. For a unreleased game, I think it's good. If it was released then I would have been disappointed because it definately could have been made to play more smooth.
