Older Factory Sealed Black Box Games Question

When I first got my Nintendo I picked up Popeye and Donkey Kong Jr. in August of 1987 with it. What I do not remember is if these came with a normal cellophane wrapping over the box or if it had a little circular Nintendo sticker on the top of the box flap only.

I came across these circular Nintendo logo stickers on Donkey Kong Jr, Donkey Kong, and Donkey Kong 3 the other day and wanted to verify if that actually was the case.

  • I don't recall personally, as I didn't get my system until 1989, but I've read a lot of threads on here that specifically state that the earliest versions of the black box games (hang tab boxes) just had the little circular Nintendo stickers on them to seal them. As I understand it, those games weren't shipped wrapped in cellophane to allow for the hang tab to be punched and slid onto a peg. I'm no expert on these, but figured I'd offer what info I'm privy to since nobody has responded about this yet.

Just based on your August 1987 timeline your copies would have had cello and no sticker

Unless he bought a copy that had been sitting on shelf for 8+ months. Impossible to tell because of the shelf-sitting factor Jason, but based on 8 months plus needed for that to be the case I'd say probably cello.

Ok, so the ones I just picked up are "older" than the ones I originally purchased that did come with wrap...

    Hi Deniz,

You're right, but I would suggest that in 1987 nothing sat on the shelf for 8 months.   It was too hot a product, so its possible but probably unlikely.

For the record I'd also say it was a minimum of 11 months not 8 as the first cello games were no later than 9/86.    So... a full year or so, on the shelf, for a blazing hot product.. its possible I guess but its a big ask
  • I have had 6 people ask me about the games being currently "sealed."

Donkey Kong looks sealed but it has been opened because the box has a crease from opening. The other two you can tell they have been opened because it says VOID under the sticker.
