Question: Did Sonic & Knuckles ever come in a plastic box, rather than the cardboard box version?

On my want-list I have about 10 Genesis games I want to collect.  These are games that I played as a kid at friends homes.  Since the Genesis is relatively cheap to collect for when it comes to CIB items, I tend to want CIB items.

However, from what I gather the only game on my list that came in a cardboard box, rather than the plastic resuable cases, was Sonic & Knuckles.  Being that I'm the perfectionist that I am, I really hope to find a copy that came in a plastic clamshell if such a thing ever existed.  I'm guessing it was never released that way but, to be sure, I thought I'd ask.

So... does it?  If so, how much more rare is it and does it cost?  I may have to accept this one in a paper box. :/

  • Nope, doesn't exist. If you were to find it it would likely be a homemade thing, which is something that people do I believe

Edit: completely forgot about the odd shaped cart. Nope doesn't exist

Typically I don't go for such things but, if priced accordingly, I might actually go for this.  I wouldn't care if I was a serious Genesis collector, but since I'll end up having probably no more than 20 or so games in my collection, yeah, I'm the guy who's annoyed about having just one in a cardboard box.  Actually, I know myself.  This would be the one game that's not CIB for me, which looks even worse.

No Ristar? That game is fantastic   I do feel ya on the one cardboard game. It doesn't look too out of place though honestly

It's because I'm a "collector-player".  I like plastic cases because I can open and close them without worrying about damaging them.  Cardboard is ok if I'm not planning on openning it, other than the initial inspection of the contents.  Me and a cousin played all of the Sonic games for the Genesis until we wore them out when I'd go over to his house.  I'd like to play them again, and I just don't like cracking open cardboard boxes 2-3 times a year when I'm ready for a re-play session.

I never played Ristar, though I do have it for Game Gear.  I need to get me a re-capped Game Gear with a new screen, which isn't cheap.  This is one I'd like to play.

it's not like an NES box, it just slides out. Much better for avoiding damage as far as cardboard goes
  • Ahhh... Well, that does help. A lot.
  • Oh, I really love the cardboard Genesis boxes. It truly separates the late release games from the golden Genesis years.

Definitely a fan of the cardboard as well. Need to get me one of these:

this was my route to victory.

took a cheap sports game plastic case, cut the cardboard S&K box to fit, and chopped down the cart holders to fit the S&K cart.

i'm sure some will take umbrage with the alterations, but, like the OP, i wanted the game CIB and didn't want to have a cardboard box.

    highly recommended.
  • Years ago, this is what I did. Using a ELECTRONIC ARTS clam shell I printed out the cover to fit the insert of the EA case and boom. Everything worked great.

I used the Japanese Mega drive cover art as Insaw that it was cooler.

I didn't know Sonic 2 ever came in a cardboard box. Was that a US release? Any other notable games that came like that?

Anyway, because Sonic and Knuckles only came in cardboard it unfortunately was one of the few childhood Sega games I don't have my original box of.

That Sonic 2 is a fairly rare variant, but variant collectors are niche so it stagnates on eBay.  Though a Mint one would go pretty quick I imagine.

And yes, no S&K clamshell variant.  If you insist, then just cut up the box and add it to a generic clamshell.  I'd be more concerned with devaluing an item than making it match the rest, but to each their own.

From all the research I've done, nobody knows the story behind it. It's definitely NTSC, so not an unusual PAL copy or something. They've popped up in the US and Canada from what I've found. This box is more like an NES box, it doesn't slide out like the other Genesis boxes. Definitely an odd piece
  • All early release Electronic Arts and Accolade Genesis games came in cardboard boxes that aren't like the 1994-97 boxes too
