Has the NES competition really become this intense?

This weekend a friend of mine had a yard sale and asked if I wanted to bring a few things over to sell, and beef up the contents.  Of course I obliged, bringing the usual assortment of yard sale knick knacks, a couple old bookcases, and yes, some NES stuff that I wanted to move along.  My friend advertised the sale on Craigslist, and also posted various signs up in the neighborhood that morning.  What happenned next, amazed me.  She got no fewer than 10 emails inquiring about the "old video games", got several people arriving up to an hour before the sale started, and even had someone show up on her doorstep the night before!!  Is this what hunting in the wild has become?  I'm all for collectors getting special items and getting good deals, but at what point does it become an annoyance, or even harrassment to the sellers?  Perhaps people need to stop and remember that not only is it about their interests as a collector, but they're also dealing with other good people as well?

Personally, I'm a very finicky collector and only deal with the same 3 or 4 people/stores, as my collection is not very big, but what I do have, I like to have really nice, and while I have been to a few yard sales, rarely even think to look for games at them.  I never realized what a competitive market it is out there.

  • I know a couple guys that will do that and yes its ridiculous when they show up the night before. But that's why I don't even bother with yard sales and sleep in on my Sundays instead.
  • It's been like this forever. Personally I think garage sale buyers are the absolute worst kinds of collectors just because of their hypocritical "I hate game store owners because they resell" then these same clowns resell themselves.
  • I'll ask at yard sales not even advertising and they'll always say 3 or 4 people have already come through asking (and in any case it's usually no). So sadly, yes, there's really this many jerks in the hobby, it's been an annoyance to seller and good collectors alike even if one or two show up an hour early.

I've half been wanting to advertise for a yard sale with old video games amount other things, and only have a repro NWC to mess with these guys XD. Maybe even play dumb and 'discover' how much it's worth right as they're about to buy it (now THAT'S how you make a prank video).
  • yeah, I don't even go out of my way anymore to look for yard sales. I stick to here. ebay and my local spot I've been going to for over a decade...
  • I blame the finders thread. If we all keep our $1 NWC garage sale finds to ourselves, there's less hype to do this
  • I have a hard time going out for garage sales. I have never really found too many deals to begin with, but it has gotten worse since I started quite some time ago. Ultimately, I only go now if I have someone to do it with, that way its a good time going around because the odds are always against me.
  • Ive had many a bounty snatched away from some guy named 'Samus'
  • Yeah. I've considered just fuckin with the people like "oh yeah there's Mario, Pac man, stadium events, Galaga, just a bunch a crap. Whats your offer?
  • I just don't go anymore.
  • I don't go searching as much as I used to, but I'm still grinding more than most. My 3 big finds this year were thanks to rain, games hidden amongst crap, and a store

making a mistake. When I go, I take it as an opportunity to walk and listen to podcasts, especially since I'm not buying every possible thing.

If one is into $5-$12 Wii titles, now is the time for you because that's most of what gets missed, imo, and you can still pick 'em up around noon.

There aren't many deals out there with everyone having a smart phone and looking at Amazon's outrageous prices. I've also found that many people asking for games tends to deplete the supply faster than not asking. Better to have them sell their games to you over 3 summers than to get it all at once and have the seller tell everyone they know video games are valuable after 2 grown men fought it out in the driveway.
  • I had a garage sale where I listed quite a few games and systems, and I made over $500 before the sale opened cuz ppl were ringing my door bell hours before we were supposed to start. Its crazy out there.
  • If people show up to my place the night before I'm telling them to come back when the yard sale actually starts. Hour before? Come back in an hour.

$50 for all and I'll pick up right now
  • If something I have to sell causes a frenzy, I'm happy...even if it's a bit annoying.
  • This may be a "your-milage-may-very" subject. I contributed some items to a yard sale of my wife's family this summer. Quality video game stuff at nice prices didn't sell (over two days) but the 80s/90s baseball cards did. Go figure.
  • Its gotten pretty bad. Demand is high and supply is always getting lower, so it gets pretty cutt throat. At my first garage sale, i had a line of people waiting outside my house hours before it started. I woke up to a guy looking through my door window around 5am. Yes, i sold a lot that day, but its not worth the crazies. I no longer put my address on signs or listings. I just put the general area and arrows the day of.

I'll do 100. Also I can't find stadium events anymore. No big deal right? Just a crappy sports game anyway
  • It's nuts, even on offer up. I recently posted a small 8-game lot of commons. Got full asking price ($45), but managed to get 4 followers in the process. Didn't realize that was a thing on offer up, but I can only guess it's for stalking listings
  • People line up down the street by me before start times. It's like a block party of crazy people. The weirdest part is that some people still insist garage sales are in any way a decent place to find games.

I can honestly say I find video games, at yard sales, all the time. just yesterday I picked up a smb/dh for $1. That was around noon just stopping on my way home from the post office. Last week I picked up a ps2 (fat), all wires, two controllers, mem card and spyro complete for $10.

Ds lite, ps1 mini (complete), two Xbox 360 controllers for $20. I could go on and on.

Its not what it use to be for retro but ps1, ps2, Xbox, wii, handhelds, even sega Genesis and GC stuff is out there.

  • If you advertise games in your yard sale add it will be a frenzy. I normally pass on yard sales advertising games.

2 weeks ago I showed up to an estate sale 10 min early (I just wait in my mini van until actual start time) that advertised some og game boy stuff. It was near by and there wasn't a lot of yard sales going on so I figured "what the hell". I notice a guy pull up around 3 min before start time and I knew he was there for the games too (the devil recognize his own).

The lady open the door and I see the game boy stuff laid out with "$100.00" tag on it. LMFAO. It was dk, sml, Kirby, link awake, maybe 5-10 more titles. As I'm looking the lady says "are you George?" I say "no" the other smiles so big and says "that's me". The lady had already sold it. WTF?!

Turns out the guy drove an hour out to pick them up.
  • We're overdue for a big garage sale next spring. I plan on fucking with a lot of people.
  • To screw with people you just advertise video games at your sale mention some commons along with some rares and everyone who asks about them just tell them that they literally just sold.

I've flirted with the idea of posting decoy yard sales.

Im almost positive people do this...well I have actually been a victim of them.

I once walked out of a yard and a guy says to me "I figured it was a fake one". I asked him if he was serious and he said "I see it all the time".
  • The decoy yard sale has passed through my mind although I have never done it.
  • I'd never sell to them early if I was hosting a garage sale. Come back when the posted start time is pal. You don't see the grocery store opening up for you at special times do you?
  • And then you get the people who post "no early birds" but tell you "oh yeah a guy came an hour before the sale and bought it all"........really? That's what you get for trying to be respectful to people. You lose out.

Or there's the fake sales...I've had it happen to me. And I've thought about doing it to other people.
  • The time I would need to spend to be competitive at yard sale hunting is just not worth it to me anymore.

    A) I would rather spend that time with my wife and child

    B) I'm at the point in my career that I make more doing my regular job (which I love) than I would possibly "make" finding deals at yard sales. I would much rather spend the money I make doing the job I love on the hobby rather than trying to hunt deals in the wild.

I'm happy to pay the premium to people who put in all the footwork finding all this stuff. It's worth it to me to not have to be out there at 4 or 5 am to maybe find something.
  • You get ahead in life by doing more than the other guy. It comes in all forms.
  • I quit going to yard sales that advertise any games because of the crap you listed in the OP. It's bad practice for other garage sales and especially rude to people conducting the sales. I had a garage sale recently and listed an N64 game drawer. I got about a dozen people emailing me about it and one guy showed up at my house knocking on my door at night asking if I had more nintendo stuff. It was ridiculous
