Bizarre Mario World Glitch

Hi all,

I live in the UK and got my hands on an NTSC SNES with Super Mario World bundled in. I'm having a weird glitch though.

Whenever I load the game and go to the world map I get this:

Has anyone seen anything like this before? I'm not able to move left or right so its not just a visual glitch. I have tried cleaning my game and the SNES but no improvement. I'm kinda worried the SNES is not working but I have no other games yet to try.

What's weird is everything thing else seems ok. The demo on the main menu plays perfectly.

Any ideas or suggestions would be great.

  • Looks like a bit got flipped due to corruption and it's loading sprites in the wrong place.
  • Ah ok, so is this a case of the cart being no good any more?
  • Could be the cart or the game. Without another console or game cannot say
  • Sadly nothing worked, but I did get my copy of FF3.

Seemed to work perfectly. No bugs, until I reached a battle and when loading the sprites the game bugged out and showed a garbled image.

I've heard of ppu issues but from what I gather they should be there all the time, not just on loading etc?
  • I had an SNES that worked for most games, but some games had extremely glitched graphics (especially Mode 7 scenes).
  • Weirdly the starting scene in FF3/6 works ok I think the bit where they're walking away from the camera is mode 7. It crashes shortly after that.
  • Looks like glitched SRAM to me. Try erasing the save game if possible.
  • Do you think anything could be related to the frequency? Are you using a 50Hz power source? What about the display, is it 50/60Hz switchable? What kind of cables are you using ??
  • It looks like Super Mario World Wrecking Crew.
  • Derp. Repeat
  • The Video RAM in the console is probably shot. Sadly, unless you're interested in hunting down an otherwise broken SNES in order to scavenge parts (which honestly isn't worth the trouble), it's toast.
