Question re: Famicom / FDS Expansion Audio

If i buy an AV-Modded (original red-white) Famicom off ebay--this wont impact the sound output, will it?

For example:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nintendo-Famicom-Console-System-NTSC-AV-Mod-Refurbished-AC100V-240V-A1-/162311545251?hash=item25ca85a1a3:g:EoMAAOSwKIpWBtpy

If i buy a pre-modded ("AV modded"--so that the system comes with a plug for the red/white/yellow "RCA" plugs, rather than using the RF adapter) , will this have any negative impact on the Famicom's 'Expansion Audio' games and playback?

I recently acquired a Famicom Disk System, and one of the features I am most excited to experience is the improved/different audio for certain games--but I wanted to be sure that if I'm using a modded AV Famicom, it wont somehow block or alter this aspect of the Famicom/FDS Expanded audio games.

Havent been able to solve this myself with google, so I thought I'd ask.  Any input is appreciated!!

  • There shouldn't be any issues. I have an AV modded Famicom and everything works fine. Do keep in mind that each hardware variant will have slightly different sound output with the audio!
  • Thanks for the input Yelir! Curious--did you buy your AV Modded Famicom on ebay (i.e. pre-modded, and purchased from ebay, etc) or did you get a modder to do yours?

  • I have seen the ones online, but I actually found a local console repair guy to do mine and he did a really good job for much less cash!
  • Unless you want to have an original Famicom, I'd suggest an AV famicom or a Twin Famicom (but then that's also because I'm not a fan of modded systems).

AV famicoms are good because those can play absolutely anything famicom (some badly-made pirates and Japanese homebrews are known for not working on the original hardware). And if you want FDS stuff, the Twin is the way to go because of the all in one factor (although a regular FDS with an AV fami isn't bad either)

Wow, thanks for the tip Vectrex (and great handle).  I've spent about 4 hrs trying to get a disk system working--halfway there, games load but then get disk error 21/22/27/28 when flipping sides--which is an improvement from where i began, but still not ideal. But in the help fixit threads ive seen references to the twin famicom but didnt know anything about it.  I need to check that out....

  • Follow up question--is the drive on the Twin Famicom any more reliable than the disk system? I like the look of the fami/disk consoles far more than the Twin, but reliability is clearly an issue....
  • There the same, you can even swap them out.

Also I have a famicom I av modded recently if your interested.

Unrelated question--newbie around here--do you need to Quote a user to get their attention (alert them that you've responded)?

Thanks for the offer--im obviously in the market.  Do you want to PM me to discuss?  I have no problem talking here.  I live in Philadelphia PA so dont know what shipping and costs you're looking for--?  I tend to buy ebay for the sales/return guarantees, but am open to talking!  I got a disk system (and have it working, for now--lots of tinkering and its running currently, but not sure for how long) but dont have a Famicom (ironic) so i cant enjoy the expanded audio (one of the main things i wanted to experience).

It generates a private message alerting the user that they were quoted by someone. That’s the best way.

I really wish there was a way to list threads I’ve participated in, sorted by which threads have the most recent activity.
