Battletoads Pic Mix Up?

On the back of the box of Battletoads (as well as in the instructions) is a picture of Level 7 - Volkmire's Inferno. You can see the big flames in the background so I know it's the part where the toads ride the jet and steer through the electrical obstacle course. But instead of the jet they are riding some kind of bike (?) and there is a ramp which looks exactly the same as from level 3 - The Turbo Tunnel.

I find it very odd that this ended up being printed in both the manual and the box. Is there a Battletoads prototype that has this part of the game intact?

  • Neat. Reminds me of the similar thing with Mario 3

  • Awesome! I've never been good at adding photos. Maybe you could help me out Bert?
  • It's an early version of Level 7. Originally, Rash and Zitz were suppose to ride Steamrollers. Rare decided that it was too similar to the Turbo Tunnel level, so the Steamrollers were replaced with the planes that are in the level now. This was mentioned in the Scribes (or Uncle Tusk?) section of Rare's website in the early 2000's.

It isn't exactly uncommon for boxes/covers to show mock-up or prototype screens. Mega Man 2's box has a screenshot of Woodman's stage with different looking trees. Pac-Man World Rally for GameCube is full of beta stuff on the cover, inside the manual, and even in the game's opening.
  • Yeah this type of stuff happens a lot.

I remember as a teen noticing that the back of the original NBA2K shows the Miami Heat uniforms from the 1990s, they aren't in the game.

The final game features the correct jerseys from the 1999-00 season.

  • MEGA MAN DOESNT SHOOT A GUN DAMMIT AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH
