Advice for Cleaning - Please

Heya folks,

I recently had a chance to pick this up, and found this bit of "frost" on it.

Was wondering if anyone knew of how to get rid of it? Alcohol didn't do anythin

  • I can't tell 100% by the pic but that looks like degradation of the plastic itself. Maybe UV damage or something?
  • Since the label is undamaged, I would hairdryer it and transplant onto a clean front. Whatever that is on the shell isn't coming off.
  • It is possible it could be wet sanded and polished to its original luster but not likely. It appears to have had some sort of solvent on it or something. Its actually amazing the label looks as good as it does considering the depths of hell the rest of the cart came from.

I have not personally transplanted a label. Good look with that and keep us posted if you do.
  • Could be a spray dye, not something that can be easily removed since it's a dye and not paint.

You could try and use a magic eraser or something, but over use of that also could wear down the texture as well.
  • Paint the cart back to grey maybe?
  • Could try fingernail polish remover. Depending what it actually is heh.

Just the opposite!  That is a stain caused by nail polish remover.

I had a James Bond Jr. cart that I sold to guitarzombie with that same kind of damage.  We figured out it was from nail polish remover after he put some on the cart in a different spot and it caused the frost.  He was able to do a label transplant to a clean front shell.

Nothing you can do to clean that off the cart, OP, sorry.

  • If it is nail polish remover try Goo Gone. A small amount on a cotton ball and blot the area. be extra careful not to get any on the label area as it will damage it.

I agree with nail polish remover being a possible culprit. Not sure of how to remove it though.

It's not possible to remove the stain because the stain is damaged, smoothed out plastic caused by the nail polish remover.  The texture is completely gone from that spot, I'm certain.  OP would have to feel it to be sure, but if there's no texture the shell is damaged beyond repair.

  • Looks like Solvent Crazing, no fix other than removing the label ( which is beautiful) and putting it on a clean front.
  • So then Frankensteining the label onto another Cart?
  • Looks like someone Goof Off'd when they should have Goo Gone'd.

I am surprised to see that suggested myself.
  • ya thats insane... I tried it once... it never goes well
  • Not sure about this one, but maybe some kind of plastic surface restorer like an Armoral car type product. I used this on my plastic bumper after bad sun fading and it made the faded white plastic look dark and like new. Used 2 coats and it was pretty fantastic. Might hide the blemish a bit.
  • Honestly I wouldn't bother fussing with it.

I'd just sell it and put the money towards a good condition copy.
