Do not ever pass a rare game you want at a good price because it has a tiny label flaw. Some games I passed on for not being perfect I later bought, still imperfect, for 3x the price... The NES is a great set to build, I for one had a blast amassing it. Down to the final 2 licensed for me!
Thanks yeah the eBay bucks add up quickly... that's where I hope to be one day... really looking forward to getting close to a full set... I'm roughly at 103 since I posted... I started with games I like to play but ultimately want a as near a complete set as possible. Thanks for the tip... I don't mind a worn label if the game functions. I like collecting games as they are interactive
To be fair, this user is very clearly labeled as being not real.

I'll also answer so they have something to read upon returning:
To the OP... get off that wallet!
User name is im_not_real. The wallet is Louis Vuitton, and money isn't the real problem. Most people with money didn't get there by throwing away... anyway the good people here took the time to give some good advice that I intend to action on... Throwing money at something I snt as fun as finding a gem or trading with like minded people...
100 NES games is a great start and the hobby is super fun! Keep an eye on eBay auctions; sometimes I'm still able to get a good deal by putting a "snipe" bid in at the last second.
Thanks I collect all types of games mostly modern stuff and consoles but I started up with NES again after moving into a bigger home and having a dedicated game room and brought my retro stuff out of storage. Nothing like firing up super c or Gradius after a long uneventful day at work...

Do you have any limits on what you would spend? That would kind of help with suggesting a strategy for proceeding.
Sweet, you are off to a good start. Just don't expect it to happen overnight but part of the fun is finding the games. I spent a good 10 years buying up different NES games at flea markets, yard sales, etc...& anytime I would find a collection with the systems and games I would buy them (around 100 frontloaders and 10-15 top loaders) & I managed to gather up a lot of rare titles this way. Once I got to around the 500 different titles I started hitting ebay & buying the most reasonable price loose cart with decent label I could find. I had a list of all the nes games printed out with rarity rating & would use a big yellow hi lighter to mark them off. Some of these were rather expensive but all in all I got by pretty reasonable this way. I recall buying a huge NES collection on ebay just to get Little Samson which also had the instruction manual. It slipped by apparently because even back then Little Samson was bringing as much as I paid for the entire lot. I got up to around 770 different titles. I never got a stadium events, bubble bath babes, hot slots, those the most recognizable games that I just could not drop so much money on they were not cheap even a few years back. Just print you out a list with rarity & that way when your out and about and find one you can determine if you are willing to drop the amount they want for it based on rarity. You'll be surprised how fast your collection will grow. I also suggest getting the games you want to play first and play them as you collect because that will inspire you to hunt even harder.
great advice I printed out a PDF list and started marking off the titles I had... I am a gamer first, collector by fault. I could never trade in any games or consoles I had. And before I knew it I had pretty decent colle tion of games/consoles.. NES is what I relate to the most it was my first console and I was hooked ever since I fired up smb.

Also you can help define your goals with what you determine a "complete set" is.
All ntsc-us, licensed games?
All ntsc-us, licensed games minus SE?
All ntsc-us, including unlicensed?
PAL exclusives?
Everyone has their own definition of a "Complete NES Set", but the only real one is whatever makes you happy.
Take your time. Set a goal. For me I had everything from nes to tg16 to ps2 and sold it all because I lost my job earlier. Everything went to a great home and the next day I get a nes with games for free so I decided to keep it. All I own for actual systems is the nes and master system with my goal is for a he complete us set for master system cart only so it's cheaper.
As far as nes I went to myself and wrote a list of the top 100 games I always had played and without much spending I'm down to 5 left
Ms pac man tengen version
Gauntlet 2
Heavy barrel
Super c
Duck tales
I'm just waiting for the right sale on these and my list is complete.

Thanks again for the words of wisdom greatly and sincerely appreciated. I think I would be happy with a complete us release set. I have a few unlicensed games too, a few homebrews as well. But again id be content with a near complete us release set...Minus the stadium events as I could never justify the exorbitant amount of money that cart goes for...

US release is licensed and unlicensed. 768 games including Myriad 6-in-1, Cheetahmen II and the three Panesians, all of which are pretty pricey (~$1000 each, maybe more.)
The licensed set is 677 games, and not counting Stadium Events, the heavy hitters are Little Samson (~$1200), Flintstones Suprise at Dino Peak ($~760), and a few others.

yeah I'll have to tactically purchase the more expensive carts... my wife would literally kill me, if she knew how much some of the games I purchased cost smh... the top 15 or so will take time... but I'm hoping to pick up a few games a week till I get to the rare and harder to find even with money games. Do you know is Elite was US release?

Elite was Europe only on NES.
Are you going for licensed only? Or unlicensed as well? Both have North American games.
I'm hoping to have both, since I do own some un. Already... but would be happy with a licenced set considering it's about 100 games less.and is goal I maybe able to accomplish in a few years. With time and patience. I have just over 100 games in total. Not counting the HBs. So I'm like 15% of the way there... I have the ultimate nes app and Elite was listed. I thought the app was NA releases only... however you telling me it's europe only and the only copies I've seen were Europe. I'm guessing the app isn't all NA releases...
Pat's Ultimate NES app? He had the Europe ones in there, too, but IIRC, you can separate them out.
Europe exclusives are:
Aladdin
Astérix
Aussie Rules Footy (AUS)
Banana Prince
Beauty and the Beast
Championship Rally
Chevaliers du Zodiaque
Crackout
Devil World
Dropzone
Elite
Formula 1 Sensation
Hammerin' Harry
International Cricket (AUS)
Kick Off
Konami Hyper Soccer
Legend of Prince Valiant
Lion King
Mr. Gimmick
New Ghostbusters II (different game from Activision's Ghostbusters II)
Noah's Ark
Over Horizon
Parasol Stars: Rainbow Islands II
Parodius
Rackets & Rivals
Rainbow Islands (Developed by Ocean, different game than NTSC version)
Road Fighter
Rodland
Smurfs
Super Mario Bros. / Tetris / Nintendo World Cup
Super Turrican
Trolls in Crazyland
Tecmo World Cup Soccer
Ufouria: The Saga
Some (most?) like Mr. Gimmick and Devil World had famicom releases as well, but for NES we didn't get them. There was also a Mario Bros game (the arcade, not Super Mario Bros) that had some differences.
I didn't go this route, but I've heard a lot of people say that purchasing lots is a great way to build up carts you don't have, and also have leftovers you can trade/sell to then get even more games you're looking for.
Ebay is always there as well, if you're just dying for something. We've got a seller's section here at NA as well, you can always message people about their items.
If you enjoy the thrill of the hunt, start hitting up flea markets, yard sales, and such (heck, occasionally I'll see NES games at antique stores these days). As it has been mentioned, the time of a box of NES games for $10 is pretty much gone (outside of a lucky break here or there), but you never know what you'll find if you don't look.
Best of luck! 100 is a great start, that's about how many I had when I joined NA (and now I'm down to 2).

You've gotten some solid advice here.
Glad you could prove me wrong and are, in fact, real.

100% why I collect Pal exclusives lol
Same for me. Don't get me wrong, I really like my Famicom collection, but I'm an NES collector and I want NES carts!

As others have mentioned best way to acquire games for cheap (or free) is buy decently priced lots, keep the games you need, and flip the extra duplicates. Ebay is probably the most plentiful source, but lately I have been having the most luck by simply posting a wanted ad on Facebook marketplace and buy/sell groups. Of course it will vary by location and what the competition in your area is like, but I get contacted at least 2-3 times per month by people looking to unload their old dusty collections. Most of the time I can get them for much less than market value too.

Super Mario Bros. / Tetris / Nintendo World Cup
Super Turrican
Trolls in Crazyland
Tecmo World Cup Soccer
Ufouria: The Saga
Some (most?) like Mr. Gimmick and Devil World had famicom releases as well, but for NES we didn't get them. There was also a Mario Bros game (the arcade, not Super Mario Bros) that had some differences.
I think it's interesting that people would rather consider pal than Famicom just because the carts look the same, even though Famicom is also NTSC and PAL obviously isn't
100% why I collect Pal exclusives lol
You've all been had.
To be fair, this user is very clearly labeled as being not real.
Haha, exactly.
And they haven't even come back to enjoy their work.
I know, I was just joking around.
You've gotten some solid advice here.
Glad you could prove me wrong and are, in fact, real.

Same for me. Don't get me wrong, I really like my Famicom collection, but I'm an NES collector and I want NES carts!
If he gets these games then all he will need to do is upgrade his NES to HD. Then he will be all set!
