Do you collect from other regions?

  • I've collected about 100 or so Japanese Super Famicom games. Mainly just because they're so cheap and I like the box designs.

I do and have for like 20 years. I don't have a lot of it anymore other than some Famicom, Gamecube, and Gameboy type stuff though, but some of it has some decent value like Trip World for one. I do have a few NGPC, and NeoGeo titles too from Japan. The FC stuff is Japanese and the Gameboy branded stuff is both Japan and Europe. I've got one Japanese Switch title as well because only they got it on physical media.

I don't really want to get into making a list but I probably have like 20-30 imports. As long as they're fun and I can play them I'll seek things out I care to play around with wherever it may have come from.

Japanese Trip World has one of my favorite box arts. Need to get a copy of that one day

    Pics of the Chinese bootleg?

Sure thing! It's a Famicom demake of the game. I've got pictures of every page in the manual, too, if you're interested in them. I can't read Chinese, so I have no idea what anything says.

    That's awesome!  Thanks for sharing.

  • I'm a Game Boy game collector in the US, and I'm doing US releases only. I'm already setting my sights on what I want to collect next, which is UKV versions of games not released in the US. It's been kind of a chore trying to determine what "PAL" exclusives have a UKV release, but I don't want the game to be in German or French or whatever. I'd love to know what JPN (or PAL) exclusives are completely playable with no Japanese (or whatever) language knowledge required, but that's a hard list to make without doing my own research.

    Playability is king.
  • Not aside from some Famicom and Super Famicom stuff, that was the extent of it for me.

Check out Cave Noire, it's a Japan exclusive rogue-like by konami. There is a translation, but it's not really necessary. Story is very light and game play is pretty straight forward, but it can get difficult. Very fun though
  • Very rarely. I have a few japanese games.

    famicom castlevania 3

    famicom little samson

    famicom mr gimmick

    famicom contra

    super famicom aerofighters

    n64 sin and punishment

Really only good games that came out in other regions or japanese variants that will save quite a bit of money.
  • I have imported quite a lot! My focus is solely on collecting unique games and I always go for the domestic option if it exists, no matter how expensive. My imports also have to be playable either in English or without any reliance on whatever language it's in. There are so many great exclusives on Famicom, FDS, Super Famicom, and Game Boy. I'm pretty proud of my import collection.
  • I actually have a Japanese GB game in route for over a week now. I discovered it existed only recently picking it out of a menu on a GB colour. It's a GB sequel to Kid Niki on the NES. The game looks and plays fantastic a true upgrade of a sequel in that art style, not the weird way it went about things on the famicom two sequels.
  • I only really go after USA releases since that's what I grew up with. But I have a fascination with games that never made it here, especially the good ones - so if I'm gonna buy say a Famicom game, it's going to be one that wasn't released here (or has big differences, that kind of thing). I have no desire to have Tennis on both NES and Famicom, but something cool like Samurai Pizza Cats? Sign me up.
  • I lived in Japan for most of the 3DS era and bought my first 3DS there. I'm not a completist at all, I only buy games I'm interested in and I have about 50? Plus a good handful of Japanese DS, GBA, and Gamecube games. I love the Japanese GC boxes. They fit so much better with the system. I also have a couple boxed SFC games and most of my PS3 games are Japan region as well (though most all play in English if your system is set that way). I'm back in the US now and bought my Switch here, so I'll buy less Japanese games now. Still up for the occasional exclusive or old favorite though. I do generally prefer Japanese design though.

Agreed. Japan got some really cool stuff and some really weird stuff, but either way it's all very interesting. How can you say no to samurai pizza cats?
  • Mostly Japanese Saturn and PC Engine stuff that never got released in the States.
  • My primary focus is collecting PAL NES and N64 games but If I see US NTSC titles that aren't in the PAL libraries I will pick them up! Pretty much look to fill the PAL gaps with US NTSC "exclusives".

I'm divided on whether to pursue Japanese games or not due to the language barrier wich will always prevent the collection from being complete. Also there a ton of shit like pachinko/horse betting/driving similation etc... just completly garbage that i have a hard time bothering me. It strange but i get the feeling a ton of games that were releqsed in Wesrern countries aren't even part of the Japanese library while they in turn "make up" for it by the stuff i mentioned...

It's true! I think shovelware is quite distinct between regions.

  • Hmm not sure why it slipped my mind but when I mentioned some systems I forgot one. N64. I have an adapter for it and two games but I'd think I'd like to get more. The two though are probably the best starter games Bakaretsu Muteki Bangaio and Sin & Punishment. I think that 2D late Bomberman title and a few others would be worthy.
