How to find rare games easily?

It existed at one time, but no amount of money has brought it out (and not for lack of trying, either.)
  • Like others have mentioned, there's no easy way.  Just luck and the persistence of looking as often as possible in as many places as possible.

All the rare/expensive games I have ever found for cheap have always been bought locally from people who didn't really know the value of what they had, and I was lucky enough to be the first to notice them.  Usually the rare/expensive game would be mixed into a lot of other common junk.  These chances are increased when you post your own wanted ads and are contacted directly by the seller, limiting competition.

Nothing beats finding someone selling a lot with an NES system and games for $100, and mixed in with the mostly common games you see everywhere there's a Dusty Diamond's, Gun Nac, or Zombie Nation.  Its happened to me plenty of times over the years and I've seen it happen to plenty of others.  Basically like gambling, winning chances are slim unless you play it all the time and you'll eventually hit.
  • There's lots of ways to get cheap rare games:

    - Search for the rarest sports games on a console. If it's not a high profile game like Stadium Events or NCAA 2k3, it's usually pretty cheap.

    - Buy a homebrew game. They have small print runs and you can get them for like $30-50. That's the best price to rarity ratio you can get!

    - Research variants. No one gives a damn about many obscure variants. A 5 screw Star Force? People are going to bid $100s for that jazz. A Platinum Hits Prince of Persia Warrior Within? It's one of the rarest Xbox releases and one is sitting unsold on Ebay for $50. If you do happen to find one, you'll probably pay $5 for it.

Do you want a top shelf, fun, desirable game for cheap like Little Samson or Space Megaforce? So does everyone else
  • Legally? Not happening.

    Illegally? Pillage and plunder.

No there are rare games. You just don't see them often......BECAUSE THEY ARE RARE !!!

  • Silly thread. Click on SNES or NES from the title bar, and then sort by rarity. Then start searching eBay for any sports title that is a 6 or higher. Some of them are relativey cheap. Beyond that, lots of cash or lots and lots of time.

I am guessing the OP is mainly talking about what the common perception of rare is. How do I find Mighty Final Fight and Dragon Fighter for NES for $3. I start the whole desirablity vs Rare convo all the time.

But yes there are some very unoccuring games in the collecting world. One of a kind items etc. :-)

  • Let me also point out dragons feet, a homebrew made for too many games that's almost impossible to find! Not even a rom because he owns the rights to the homebrew, and hasn't done anything with it after those too many games cart. As stated by a member of the forums (NESHomebrew) ("If/when the developer decides they want it public they can do it.).

Go find me a copy of Gamma Attack for the Atari 2600 that's currently for sale

Trust me. Any collector that has one has a sellling price if you can afford it.

    All 2 of them?

Sure, if I said hey, I'll give you 1 million dollars for it, they would likely say yes, who the hell wouldn't. But I think its safe to say they're pretty out of reach. But regardless, 2 copies known to exist, you're telling me thats not rare?

Semantics I know. The definition of the word rare is fitting I admit. I suppose something that is rare is not always expensive either. Quite the opposite. Unless there is a market or desirability for it.

Yeah, I remember hearing about some PSP game that was very hard to find but nobody cared so its like $15. I do get what you're saying though, I could go out and buy Stadium Events right now if I really wanted to and had the money. Its a combination of rarity and desirability

Is there more info on this? Is this just pics of a possible gambling prototype then for the NES?

  • Trading up is a decent way without hurting the wallet, otherwise, gotta scout garage sales, goodwills, etc etc. Ask people you know if they have any old gaming stuff collecting dust, but yep no good simple answer available.

Find me a copy of CJ Elephant Fugitive for Game Gear for sale right now. Cause I've been looking for months.

The name of that game made me lol out loud in a very quiet office setting.

  • Log onto ebay and type in the game you want. Done.

Hahaha yea it's pretty dumb. Also the bane of my Game Gear collecting existance at this point.

  • Sometimes, the cheapest way to find something is to pony up the cash on eBay upfront.
  • Get your local game on and buy a bunch of cheap* merrio zelda and dernkey kong console lots. Clean em up and trade with a local store that gives good credit, and use towards w/e u want. Or sell and just go on eBay idk, but stores usually streamline the selling process.
  • Be ready to shit out that Green doh!!!! Lol....
  • Just go to your local shops, flea markets, yard sales, etc.

They're not always gonna be easy to find, but that's the thrill of the hunt. You gotta go out there and look for it. Some things you might just luck out on.

Funny...and true.    I have had a little bit of luck with the Nextdoor app.  Picked up a few gems for way under ebay.
