is it necessary to have to have 5 extras for complete game series set

Just a thought but is it necessary to have to have 5 extras thing related to the game set?  some of these series dont really have many toys or trinkets to collect and its more money spent than necessary.  theres a few set i could claim badges on if i didn't need extras to go along with it.

I think if you go out of your way to get a complete in box series set the extras arn't needed. (or have most of them complete in box)

i understand some of these set only have a few games in it like star fox and earthbound (only one)  but other like mega man and super mario bros have quite a few games required to complete a set.

personally i think these rules should be changed but thats my opinion.

Anyways that my early morning rant/thoughts for today.

  • I've wondered about this too, as well as the thinking about those awards being given in perpetuity despite the requirements changing as time goes on. What I mean is folks who complete the sets earlier get the badge but aren't beholden to necessarily keep up with whatever new games come down the pipe. If a particular series originally only had games up to the N64 era and folks got it, great; then several Wii games come out which are added to the series and newcomers are required to get those in addition to the previous ones. True "super fans" will get whatever is required, but I've seen enough folks talk about how they were close on something due to general collecting (versus being a super fan) and went and bought a couple of things just to be able to get the badge. So, when a badge updates, who keeps everyone with a badge honest and makes sure they actually go get the additional stuff that's been added to the requirement? With this in mind, I think adding "tiers" to various collections might make more sense; Zelda tier 1 is everything cart-based, tier 2 starts including the Wii and DS stuff, tier 3 adds Wii U and 3DS stuff, etc. Use the same badges currently offered, just add a numeral to the corner to indicate which version someone has attained, with higher tiers taking the place of lower ones so no need to keep up with who has what--folks will need to re-qualify when something updates if they want the new tier.
  • I have the DOS PC Mega Man. Is that even part of the Mega Man set? It'd be weird to call it an "extra" when it's an entire game.

Insults to gaming series don't count.

The complete series set award isn't just that you own every game on the list, it also represents a level of fandom in the franchise. The "5 extras" requirement separates those who activity enjoy and seek out games in that series from people who acquired a full set incidentially or are only interested in checking off boxes. The latitude given for those extra items is pretty wide; it can range from protos & ultra-rare developer items to home-made crafts.

  • In your case OP, the boxes would be considered as "extra items".

There's all kinds of merch out there, there's ports, theres hacks, if a character makes an appearance in another game like Super Smash Bros. Theres tons of stuff out there. Name a franchise where you think there isn't 5 items and I'm sure we can find something
