Looking for somebody to repair my Sega CD Model 1

The other day I heard something crackle in my CD system while playing a Genesis game. I powered it off right away.

I did plug it back in today and it powers up, audio works, and it plays games a intended. However, the system stays on after I turn off the Sega Genesis.

I have opened it up and two thngs stand out. One transistor bt the power plug looks bad. The second is a cap that looks to have popped. The cap smells fried too.

  • I know there are many here who can help. Not sure who does it here. https://www.facebook.com/groups/193924881096119/
  • Thanks! I’ll check out the group.
  • I can do repairs on these. The power transistor is a pretty common failure. The cap that looks like it may have blown is something I haven't seen before, but as long as it didn't cause damage to any of the IC's, you should be ok just replacing it.
  • It actually works as intended, however those two pieces are shot. I am not capable of doing the work myself and am happy paying the price to get this fixed.

Please let let me know what it would cost to have you fix this for me.
  • Get all those surface mount caps replaced ASAP. I recapped mine and there was electrolytic leakage and the pads didn't look great.
  • I'd have to try and find a replacement for the blown one. The TR4 is readily available, those are really common. I was agree you should consider recapping the system as the smd caps do leak on these. Honestly, just to replace the TR4, it will probably cost you more in shipping, but I'd say $10 parts and labor for that. Once I find a replacement for EM1, I can give you an idea on that.

Or if you want to do a recap, then I will just throw those parts in with the recap.
  • Thanks for offering. I was able to ship out my system to somebody listed in the FB group above.
  • Good luck. Never heard of that group before. I hope he does a good job for you. Not a big fan of how he does some of his repairs from the Youtube videos I looked at, but at least they didn't look like garbage. When you get it back, post up pictures and a review of the service.
