I disagree.  I'll take Castelavina Dracula X Rondo of Blood for the TurboGrafx 16 CD system for the win.

Never played it, but if can compete with SotN, sounds like I'll need to at some point.

Definitely try it.  It is the best of the "old school" feel Castlevanias before the Metroid and RPG elements were added.  You only have one main weapon, which is your trusty whip.  You have the secondary weapons as usual, the potion, the dagger, etc.  It was a CD game that actually took advantage of the CD format properly in having huge levels with massive amounts of sprites and of course red book audio.  It has multiple paths you can take, with different bosses, and a lot of secrets sprinkled in as well.  The last boss fight is actually the beginning of SotN.  If you do play it I recommend going for the complete experience and playing it on original hardware.  That can get pricey though.  For a cheaper solution you can play it on the Wii Virtual Channel so I hear.

I'll have to bug D~Funk to get it so I can play in on his fancy-schmancy TG16CD hookup next time I'm there. Thanks for the recommendation, love me some Castlevania.

If you have a PSP you can play it on there too. Though you have to suffer through the awful new 3D graphics. You can unlock the original though, as well as SOTN

  • Super Castlevania IV was my favorite in the 16-bit wars. Later on, when I got a Genesis and Bloodlines, I really enjoyed it, but SCIV left a more lasting impression, especially due to its amazing soundtrack.
  • IV, Bloodlines is not even close. IV is a masterpiece of control and music, the animation is awesome, and although the art can appear a little muddy, the style is strong and atmospheric. The title screen and opening cut scene are Fantastic. Bloodlines animates janky, the control is good, not great, the music is good, the colors hurt the atmosphere. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Bloodlines fan, but it can't touch Super Castlevania IV.

SC IV Soundtrack for the win!
  • So awesome to see all my Castlevania homeboys surfacing
  • IV may be my favorite game of all time. Every level is magic. The music, the athmosphere, the paralax scrolling, the enemy placement...

Saying that it is a watered down CV1 is blasphemy in my view. And I love CV1 as well, one of my favorite NES games.

But if you are a fan, you definitely need the other 2 as well (bloodlines and rondo). I think they are retro gaming at its best
  • Super Castlevania IV Vs Castlevania Bloodlines is easily my favourite Castlevania game so I voted for that.

lolololol Tbone is that u, never noticed u were in here before
  • IV no doubt. It wins for the soundtrack alone which is one of the best ever. I'll never forget the haunting music that plays when entering your name at the start
  • For all of its flaws and general lack of difficulty, it is hard to deny that the Indiana Jones whip usage in Castlevania IV was a fun experience.

Yes, it is I.  The one and only tbone3969.  And who may I ask are you?  Are you on the PC Engine forums perhaps?

  • Tetsunoku vs. Super Castlevania IV was great too, but it's pretty obscure and I get we're only talking about the original SCIV vs. Bloodlines game.

How do I shoehorn in the fact that Rondo is better than Drac X on SNES if the conversation is so limited in scope?

    Start your own thread?

  • I know it's not the question, but Drac X has taken over Castlevania IV for me as of late. A big part is because it's much more challenging and therefore I enjoy playing that over IV now.

  • Ahaha that wasnt the question bro. Its bloodlines vs super castlevaina. Its not "THE BEST CASTLEVANIA GAME" topic.. but its cool
  • Ummm its super castlevania vs bloodlines.. its not, the best castlevania ever. Soo yeaa. Rondo is the best one but that wasnt the topic

thats like asking "Sonic 1 vs Sonic 2?" And someone says, "wow how can you forget about sonic and knuckles??" I didnt forget, its about SCIV and Bloodlines!
  • Oh yea bro. Castlevania is deffinitly the best game/retro game in my opinion
