Yes, it is I.  The one and only tbone3969.  And who may I ask are you?  Are you on the PC Engine forums perhaps?

Silent Debugers bro! And the PCE LT

Yes, now I remember. What's your vote?

  • THANK YOU! Rondo of blood is amazing. But this isnt "the best castlevania" topic
  • Just playing Castlevania IV now for the first time on my SNES Classic so I'll hold off judgement until I am finished. So far a great game but it will be hard to knock SOTN off the top spot in my heart.

Both Bloodlines and IV are great games and they both have great cover artwork. It is sad to think that the artwork for Castlevania IV and other early Castlevania artworks are gone forever. In early 1995 the Great Hanshin Earthquake struck the city of Kobe and most of the early original Castlevania artwork was destroyed. Most of the original articles that talks about this are no longer up but using the wayback machine I found this IGN reference.
Much of the older Castlevania games lack current-day high-res art, as the majority of the original content was lost in a major earthquake during the late 90's in Kobe, Japan.
I feel very fortune to have found these two pieces. Here is a sketch and the original painting from Bloodlines. The same artist also illustrated the cover for Castlevania IV.

Ehhhh idk, probably bloodlines. I havent played either in years though, so that might change if I decide to play them both again before halloween
  • Wow this tie in the poll just wont let up
  • Beat them both, you?
  • Ummm idk if you even read this thread but over 5 people brought up rondo of blood. This is a fucking "super castlevania vs bloodlines" topic. Not the "best castlevania game ever" topic
  • Yea i beat them both. I speedrun SCIV . Iv been practicing everyday
  • I always particularly enjoyed Bloodlines over SCIV. Using a weapon other than a whip just caught my attention I guess.

Off topic - Always enjoyed Dracula X over them both, even if it wasn't the proper port of Rondo.
  • That drawing is fucking awesome!! You never played super castlevania iv til the snes classic came put? I envy you cuz you are playing it for the first time. I play it EVRYDAY. It is awesome. And bloodlines is my favorite one too. Castlevania SOTN Very goood but i dont think its better then SCIV or Bloodlines. I kinda dont like the non-linear games. SOTN is amazing game and i enjoy it but the linear castlevania games i prefer.
  • But i do think bloodlines last 3 bosses are harder than SCIV last 3 bosses. Sciv is deff the easiest castlevania
  • You selling those bloodlines drawing/painting? I need one so bad! Im a huge castlevania fan ANd collector..

And feel free to post your entire thought in 1 post, instead of 3-4 rapid fire. Or even edit if you are feeling froggy.

He's working on adding Rondo of Blood in there I think
  • I've had both, and I've retained one - the SNES game.

SCIV has a far better gameplay mechanic, stage design and variety of stages, far superior audio core and the music and sound effects in general, better use of detail and color as well and just the creatures and bosses too. The Genesis game while good, at times just feels like some cobbled together after thoughts of stages slapped in order for different regions of the world to try and make some sense of the mess. It feels more rough and stilted, wooden with the control of your attack and jumping. Some of the music is a really good selection but suffers from the often cruddy output of the Genesis where it sounds metal band/tinny and the sound effects are just less pronounced but sound fine though. It never made sense to me for years and years seeing this question asked between the two as there was nothing really better for the Sega release other than having a nice choice of distinctly different characters changing the way you approach the stage with the whip or that pike. Even if the Genesis wasn't older hardware, or Bloodlines had been a SNES only release too I'd still call it the lesser product so it's not some nintendo lover thing.

I think Konami did their better work on Genesis with Rocket Knight and the Sparkster sequel. Contra was fairly more interesting on there too with Hard Corps.

The Bloodlines people should make a new thread

  • I am a huge castlevania fan and I would have to say of the two games bloodlines is better. I really like the level where the water is going up and down and you can see your reflection in the water.
  • I'm going to say Bloodlines for me personally. This thread inspired me to go back and play both games over the last two nights (not kidding hah) so I played both back to back. I love them both for different reasons, and they each have their pros and cons. IV clearly wins in terms of character control and whip control, this is hard to really dispute.

I actually like the music compositions better in Bloodlines, and it has one of my favorite Castlevania songs of all time which is Calling from Heaven on stage 6.

I felt like IV was a bit easier so I liked the challenge of Bloodlines. I also liked the more vibrant colors and environments. Both games had some unique environments and stages.

Questions like this are going to come down to preference. Both games are great, so you can't really go wrong!

He's clicking "Reply" next to "Quote" and reasonably expecting the reply to go to that post, since the button is repeated on every post. If you are on the Vintage view it may look different but I've long wondered why we have a Reply button on every post instead of the bottom and top of the page. The one at the bottom is really the Submit button for the in-page Reply/text field which is plain-text and doesn't allow you to post quotes and such.

I actually recently played through both games in the past 2 months, so they're pretty fresh in my mind.  I think its great that Konami chose to make two different 16-bit Castlevania games, rather than just porting the same game to both platforms.  Gives gamers more variety.  Both games have their strengths over the other, but I don't think one is superior to the other.  So I guess if you have to pick one as a favorite it comes down to personal preference of the differences.

One thing I will say though, I much prefer the boss battles in Bloodlines, especially the boss rush leading up to the final battle.  That's a huge score for Bloodlines.  But yeah, both great games and highly recommended.  Definitely grab Bloodlines soon if you don't have it, price continues to climb.

This is actually a great point and I agree completely.  The reason I went back to play both games, is because I've already beaten both of them, probably several times, but it has been a long time.  So I wanted to get current playthroughs in to be able to answer better.

Anyway, in my quest to play both of them and determine which one I liked better, you know what I realized?  Both games are awesome, and I just love Castlevania!  I'll stick with my previous answer of Bloodlines in terms of personal preference, but honestly, both games have little things that are cool and different, and I love that they made two different games.  I was playing through and analyzing features at first, but I quickly just got lost in that and was just having fun playing the games - a reminder of how much I love the the traditional Castlevania series.

Yeah, they are both great.  If I had to choose one as the better, I'd probably give the edge to Bloodlines.  The final boss battle(s) and overall challenge is better IMO, and the art design of the stages I just prefer in the Genesis game.  Something about it I just prefer the look more.  It just seems more colorful and alive to me, compared to SCIV which feels a bit more drab.

But these things are more or less personal preferences, rather than differences that can be objectively stated as better/worse.

  • Wait, am i doing something wrong?
  • I can't believe how the Bloodlines OST is so overlooked. SCV4's music is okay, but Bloodlines surpasses it in every ways ! Not a single track is bad ! My favorites being the music in the 1st, 4th and 5th stage (the baroque inspired tune from the 5th stage is my favorite). I guess people in general prefer atmospheric music rather than melodic music. I never played SCV4, but I love Bloodlines. One of the best Genesis games. The only point of comparison I can judge is music and Bloodlines completely destroys SCV4 on that level. This OST is my favorite on the Genesis with Thunder Force 3.

I always thought the 2nd stage had the best tune.
