i do have to agree with lando though, super gameboy is hard to top. sure, the game boy player has color and advance support, but there's no super gameboy, none of the borders or the cool games like donkey kong 94 with the voice samples. the gamecube controller isn't as good as the snes controller for 2d games either.
Gamecube Component Cables? Where Can I find some? I cant see myself paying $200 plus for a set of cables, are there any other alternatives? Composite to Component is a big difference, any help guys and gals.
As of now there is not. I bought mine orginally from the Nintendo Online store back in like 2002. I actually recall using dial up internet to make the purchase. Yes 480p is a huge leap from 480i. I remember buying
an HD CRT TV ($900) from best buy and playing Gamecube (Metroid) and Xbox (Halo) in 480p via the component cables. I was literally blown away and still remember what that initial shock and awe and felt like....Almost like seeing boobs for the first time or a pair of womens panties that were not my moms. It was that good!!!
New From Nintendo!!! Gamecube Component Cables...........Not your moms underwear.
I went through that process... twice. My first set was stolen along with my entire GC collection. I ordered again late 2004 or early 2005 but they were backordered. They never showed as in-stock again but the backorders were filled right before the ability to backorder closed for good so I think I got in on the very last batch.
I finally sold them less than a month ago in anticipation of the HDMI solutions that are in the pipe.
I got some widescreen Samsung CRT for $900+ and was furious that it forced me to stretch 4:3 GameCube games to 16:9 in progressive scan. I quickly returned it and ended up paying $2,300 for a Sony XBR910 (+300 for the matching stand -$200 merchandise card). This was all at Circuit City. The XBR910 is still amazing!
I went from official S-Video cables to progressive-scan component so the quality jump wasn't nearly as noticeable for me. In fact, I remember being extremely disappointed when I noticed that enabling prog scan just made everything look pixelated in 1080 Avalanche on my XBR910. The tiny squirrel on the title screen, for example, actually looked like a squirrel in 480i component or S-Video, but turned into a tiny blob of pixels as soon as I enabled 480p. Scanlines have a sort of anti-aliasing effect and also the TV's fancy image processor does less to the image in prog scan. I prefer a more pure image, however, but the 480i image was just THAT much better.

The Wii's component output isn't quite as good as the DOL-001 GC with component cables but I figure your issue may be something different. Make sure your Wii is set to 480p in the settings and hold B on a GC controller when booting GC games to enable progressive scan. This only works for NTSC GC games.
Even then I could instantly tell the difference on my Sony's XBR910. I would see moire patterns in the dithered areas of The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker on the GC + component and they weren't there with the Wii (noticed launch day, November 19th, 2006).
Yeah. That's what MLIG reported also. Whatever the blur is it seems to completely change the way my TV's image processor handles the progressive signal which makes an even more dramatic difference than just the blur.
In late 2005/early 2006 I used a battery pack to try my GC + component cables on on a Sony XBR970 floor model at Circuit City. It was the Taiwanese tube instead of the Sony SFP tube but the image processor did not create the same moire effect in Wind Waker.
point is, i don't think a slight blur effect is worth dropping $300+ on a special cable. not to mention, a gamecube does far less than a wii. gamecube requires hardware mods or obscure accessories to get any expanded functionality beyond gamecube and gba games. the wii has wii, wiiware, virtual console and gamecube support. if you softmod it (only needs an sd card), the wii becomes a darn good rombox and media player.
Quoting what I've said a few years back, just in case if anyone's in the market for a backwards compatible Wii.
One thing to mention, I used to think all white Wiis are backwards compatible, but according to many who post here (and have shown proof they exist) there's some white ones out there that aren't. They're very difficult to find, but they're out there.
Just be careful when doing some Wii shopping if you want to get a Wii that can play Gamecube.

If you have a Wii that says "Wii" "power" "reset" reading horizontally on the front while the system is horizontal, it does NOT have the Gamecube ports and you will not be allowed to play Gamecube.
Example (sets horizontally, with the word "wii" horizontal) :
^ Not compatible. (Note that it's beween the SD card door and the eject button) I think there's a black Wii that's also not compatible (There is one out there that is though)
Now, if the Wii sits vertically and the words on the front faceplate reads horizontal, you're in luck! You got a backwards compatible Wii! Most of these even come with a stand to stand your Wii up (Makes sense now why Nintendo never released the newer models with stands... it won't make sense with the words only reading vertical if the system is vertical!)
^ Fully compatible.
So grab your favorite GC comtroller and/or memory card and have a blast!
Some things to note:
* Gamecube games won't work with any wii accessories, because Gamecube wasn't made with "waggle" in mind. And no, the classic controllers won't work either.
* However, some-not all- Wii games work Gamecube controllers! (Like Smash Bros Brawl! YEAH!)
* Gamecube games do not save on the system or SD card, you need a Gamecube memory card for save features.
Any Wii manufactured before October 2011 will be Gamecube compatible. The late model Wii's (October 2011 and later) also does not have online functionality, only has one USB port, and the Active Life and Dance Dance Revolution Wii games either won't play or won't work properly because they require the Gamecube controller ports.

There were a ton of white Wii's sold with no GC ports. They did not include the vertical stand and the Wii logo on the front is rotated to reflect this.

Does the Wii support LAN play for GC games? Eight-player Double Dash can be EPIC!
No, I'm not seriously trying to convince people to buy a GC solution instead.
I was expanding on your point to say that the slight difference can be more significant depending on your TV and that the blur could even be a good thing. Heck, it could be an intentional thing done deliberately to fix artifacts like the one I described.
I've never found a white wii without the gc ports. the vast majority are early ones, from 2006 - 2008.
if you install nintendont on your wii, you can use the wiimote + classic controller. the horizontal-oriented wii (rvl-101) can in fact play gc games that way, still no original discs or controllers though.
as for the broadband adapter for gamecube, you could install devolution on a couple of gc-compatible wiis and either use wi-fi or two usb ethernet adapters. that way, you can still use two original copies of mario kart double dash and original gc controllers.
i can't see the broadband adapter being a gc selling point, those things are crazy overpriced.

Yeah, I've noticed the ones that lack a vertical stand are the ones that have the words on the front face spelled out horizontally when sat horizontally-- which makes sense.
I know you've said there's a ton of white Wii's with no ports now, and I believe you (they're all over Ebay), but it might be a region thing? We do console repairs and sell Wiis where I work (We had this gamestore for over 20 years), and I haven't seen a white non-compatible one since they came out.
I wish I had a working phone to show you the stack of white Wiis we have here. Out of all of them, not one is the non-backwards compatible one.

Exactly. I wasn't trying to sell anyone on the idea of two GCs with two BBAs with two progressive scan video solutions. The very ridiculousness of it was intended to bolster your point. Very cool to know that you can do LAN play on a Wii though!
well, not all tvs are created equal. i'd say you just happened to find a tv that doesn't play nice with certain 480p sources.
It's only the absolute best-rated PQ in any television of any kind of all time, last I checked.
Appropriate TVs for prog-scan GC were few and far between back in that time. Most assumed a 480p source is either anamorphic or has aspect controls on the source device (almost exclusively a DVD player, cable/sat STB, or external HDTV tuner back then).
Seeing that this TV's scaler handled 240p perfectly which even modern TVs often can't do, the potential for encountering artifacts like this on today's televisions remains high and the the Wii seemingly fixing it seems just as relevant now.
honestly i'd love to have a white gc-less wii just for the novelty. i have seriously never seen one, not even online. I used to think they didn't exist, that the rvl-101 without the gc ports only came in black, red and blue colors.
four gamecubes, four copies of mario kart double dash, four broadband adapters, four tvs, four component cables... maybe some millionaire gamer has that setup?
I've tried the wii with devolution software method before, it works quite well. i used two plain white wiis connected to a wi-fi router (with internet access). there was occasional hiccuping, i think it disconnected once. i think the router network was too busy or my wiis were too far away. i'd imagine two usb ethernet adapters would be ideal. i haven't tried four wiis networked together yet.

It can't just be a region thing because retail stores around the world literally had no BC Wii's left in 2011 and for years after while they all still had white Wii's on the shelf. What you're noticing is just how many Wii's were sold comparatively early in the Wii's lifetime. Also, white Wii's were only a smaller portion of total Wii sales after the change, since we had red, black, blue, etc at that point. Statistically, more people who wanted White would have bought earlier in the consoles life or settled for used later, further depressing sales of the revised white console.
Still, every store had shelves of them for years so there are a lot even if they are so much less common.

Saw one at the fleamarket Saturday. Part of this may just be that they don't stand out so you don't often know you're looking at one without closer inspection.
As for the millionaire's MK: DD setup: Yeah, I guess there was potential to make the "EPIC[LY RIDICULOUS]" scenario much more ridiculous. Thanks for taking it all the way!
...or have we gone all the way? Logitech SpeedForce wheels with SpeedForce Accessory Kits (only way to get pedals) for EVERYONE!

I know a person who has the equipment to play 16 player Double Dash (without split screen), although I don't believe any component cables are included. Still an impresive setup.

he has the equipment... but does he arrange double dash parties?
hey wait, how does he pull off 16 player double dash without split-screen? the maximum is four gamecubes, that means four players per gamecube, four-way split-screen on each tv.

oh duh, how could i forget? 16 WAVEBIRDS!
i know what to look for in wiis. the wii logo on the front is a dead giveaway. i have yet to see a white gc-less wii for sale that has the horizontal logo.

He has offered, but he lives in Finland, so........ I haven't taken him up on his offer yet. He also has a big family from what I understand.
I had no clue there was a GC-less Wii. I got an early Wii and sold my GC to a friend for the upgrade. At that time, the way I saw it was that I was primarily interested in keeping up with my GC library, but I liked the online feature of the Wii. Dumping my GC and getting a Wii was a no-brainer... when I finally found one in a store 9 months after release.

Fair enough. Again, I'm not denying their existance, just haven't seen any in the wild or on store shelves. Maybe they were there and I haven't noticed them, but I never had any come in either (From customer or wholesale)
I'm also in the camp of those who knew about the existence of the non BC Wii, but have never seen one (outside of the Mini). Does the non BC Wii still have the doors on the top, or is the top sealed?
if you take the top off by removing some screws, you'll see the inner case has the holes for the gc ports there. even the motherboard inside still has the solder spots for the controller ports and memory card slots. apparently they do work if you add back those things.
like i said, softmod such a gc-less wii, run nintendont, use the classic controller and virtual memory cards.
Damn....all this LAN talk is badly making me want to pick up a 2nd original Xbox system, 2nd copy of Halo 2 and the Multiplayer Map Pack for my house. I had entirely forgotten the Gamecube could do LAN as well, now I suddenly regretting getting rid of it for that alone! I also forgot that PS1 can do system link, so for that alone it is also not a "useless" console by any means
the gamecube is still largely useless once you softmod some wiis and install devolution on each one. devolution is a gamecube loader for wii that can emulate the broadband adapter, compatible with wi-fi or usb ethernet adapters.

four gamecubes, four copies of mario kart double dash, four broadband adapters, four tvs, four component cables... maybe some millionaire gamer has that setup?
I've tried the wii with devolution software method before, it works quite well. i used two plain white wiis connected to a wi-fi router (with internet access). there was occasional hiccuping, i think it disconnected once. i think the router network was too busy or my wiis were too far away. i'd imagine two usb ethernet adapters would be ideal. i haven't tried four wiis networked together yet.

There were a ton of white Wii's sold with no GC ports. They did not include the vertical stand and the Wii logo on the front is rotated to reflect this.

Still, every store had shelves of them for years so there are a lot even if they are so much less common.

honestly i'd love to have a white gc-less wii just for the novelty. i have seriously never seen one, not even online. I used to think they didn't exist, that the rvl-101 without the gc ports only came in black, red and blue colors.

Fair enough. Again, I'm not denying their existance, just haven't seen any in the wild or on store shelves. Maybe they were there and I haven't noticed them, but I never had any come in either (From customer or wholesale)
like i said, softmod such a gc-less wii, run nintendont, use the classic controller and virtual memory cards.
