  • Who knows what the future holds, they might skyrocket in price 10 years from now or they may lose 80% of their value. I'm personally buying to play the games and fulfill my childhood fantasy of walking into my game room and seeing that massive library and video game memorabilia.
  • I'd like do r the prices to level out of come down some. There are some awesome snes titles I want.
  • Dont bet on it. In demand high value titles for every system will most likely trend upward over time.

Sell your Nintendo games! The bubble is bursting!

  • One sold at Ben Game Zone a local retro store a few months ago for $550.00. I passed on it, don't really like the game that much. Maybe I should have bought it. Then again, if I had to pay current market for my little Sampson I would have passed on that as well....and I like that game.
  • Anything with the Nintendo label on it is a hot commodity right now. Hence the insane price gouging on games. It really has gotten out of hand, but that's not going to stop me from getting what I want thats for damn sure.

I think it broke 1k at a point. It was more than Little Samson, but Samson took the lead

Never seen it pass Little Samson. Average high loose price per GVN is $929 in July of last year. Maybe a mint Flint will be worth more than Sucky Samson for sure. But GVN factors all sold listings. Some very crappy copies of games effects the average so one would really have to look closer.

Samson didn't catch fire until 2012/2013 when a lot of the NES library started doubling / tripling overnight.  It didn't overtake F2 consistently until maybe 2015 or so.  F2 used to be the measuring stick for all NES licensed and Samson was way down the line.

When I started collecting in 2008, Bubble Bobble 2 was actually the measuring stick right behind F2.  Pricecharting had F2 around $300 then, BB2 in the mid to low $100s and Samson was probably $50-$75.

There's a lot more to NES collecting than just the last couple of years GVN has existed.

When I dabbled in collecting in 2001, Dragon Warrior IV was one of the most expensive games and was going for around $150 CIB.  I remember Bubble Bobble 2 and Snow Brothers also being two expensive games back then.  I wasn't serious about collecting (and unfortunately I quit soon, only to resume again in 2013), but it's funny that DW4 price has stayed stagnant while the rest of the library has gone berserk.

why does this game keep popping up? This is third time I've heard someone talking about tengen Tetris just today.

Yeah what was that on Etlers list? Was it a B or A rarity? Funny how far we've come.
  • With these prices dropping it kind of explains stuff I've seen locally. I know of a shop that has multiple lose, complete and even sealed up mid-late era NES games mixed with your standard stuff and some of them were over the 1K mark too. This was a couple months back, but that was the second time I saw them from a couple months earlier and the supply expanded as nothing sold due to the sticker shock.

In the 1990s it was considered one of the rarest and most controversial NES games

Honestly I think it was an A, and Stadium Events was a B+

Tengen Tetris was kind of a mythical game back in the day. That there was a mysterious "other" Tetris game that was better than the Nintendo one, and I think that drove some of the hype. But then they started turning up and it wasn't as rare as first believed.

  • I think with F2 people are coming it realize it isn't quite worth what people previously thought and/or the number of people willing to drop that kind of money on a loose cart is depleting. We will have to see what the future holds
  • What was the point of this thread? Rare games are surprisingly expensive?
  • This is a slight tangent but, IMHO, I think we're about to see a gaming "correction", very likely in the next 48 months. However, my speculation has absolutely nothing to do with games, it's the economy. Recessions hit, on average and if I recall correctly, every 6 years. That last recession was the "great recession" in 2007/2008 and if you look at historic charts we've actually gone a long time without a market correction.

Though a stock market correction doesn't always have to mean much, when people see markets down 10-20% and jobs take hits, people both hold on to their money and sell off superfluous items. All that said, it's been really hard for me to set aside funds waiting for deals. i have a hunch that the next recession is going to scare quite a few people. It might not be as bad as the 08 crisis but business booms and busts happen in cycles, it's just a fact, and we've been booming for near 10 years. What ever fall happens next is likely to at least look big on paper, and should scare a lot of people to clear out their closets and to rethink holding onto $2,000+ collections that don't get used much.

Im sure it's regional but there are people in my area that sell because they need money.  The strong stock market hasn't lifted all boats.  I think the trick to game collecting is to buy as low as you can and sell as much as you can to make a small profit, get games for free, or get them at a good discount.  I hoarded when things were cheap but for the last 2 or three years it has been a good time to sell.

Nah, I remember the "victory lap" I did when I finally managed to score one for myself and another for my best friend.  I think "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" also falls into the "big hitter" category during that era, which is kind of sad by today's standards, lol.

And yeah, we're old, lol.  We remember what it was like to go play outside in the afternoons, a mostly alien concept these days.
  • I remember the whole unicorn effect with Tengen Tetris. I remember if you could find it, it would go for over 100 but then stuff like dragon warrior 3 and 4 would top out in the maybe 30-40/50 range being the most coveted tops back when complete or loose games had the same value since people didn't get all stingy over included items. Also around then you could score stuff like the late taito and capcom stuff in the 10-20 range too. Now look which is the relatively cheap game.
  • There was wayy too much buzz about Smurfs on 2600 in the early '90s.
  • Wait, so is the thread basically that the OP thought that price was high and then realized it was a little low?

    Yes...lol.
  • I sold my F2 about a year ago for 1K.

Prices seemed to have dropped a little since.

I still have Etler's rarity guide printed out from when I start collecting in the mid 90's.  I'll check the rarity when I get home.  (I suppose it's probably still available somewhere on the interwebs)

I remember being so happy to find Palamedes, Treasure Master, and Mermaids of Atlantis (all rated A for rarity iirc), thinking I really lucked out but I believe they are all still pretty inexpensive now.  Also found Panic Restaurant (also an "A") at the same time, which obviously has gone waaay up!  All of them were $5.  Damn I miss those days when no one wanted NES carts.  Tengen Tetris was also perceived to be much rarer back then too.

On both of Etler's 4.0 (6/26/97) list and 6.0 list (01/03/03), Tengen Tetris was listed as an A- in rarity.
