What are these?

So I recently came across these... and I'm not sure what they are?

  • Very interesting. Following.
  • First one is a microphone for Mario party.

Edit: maybe not actually. Just looked up pics and it's different

The base sure looks like that for a gamecube microphone:

Maybe the case has been taken off the microphone portion?

  • I don't think it's a mic. See the serial number "RLED30137" I'm guessing it's an LED sensor. You might have some prototype hardware on your hands, or this is for an obscure game I've never heard of.

Where did these devices come from? I know this is wild speculation (oh, let me have some fun) but I wonder if Nintendo hacked some of these types of devices for developers to get their hands wet in programming for a system like the Wii, before Wii dev machines were available. The Wii is just a beefed up GameCube so that would make sense to me.
  • I agree that the base looks the same as the microphone, but the rest looks like a sensor bar from the Wii.

Remember that the Wii motion controls were originally meant as an add on for the GameCube. Is it possible that you found some type of prototype for the GC motion controls? Since the GC didn't have a port for the sensor bar to plug in, I can see them running it through the memory card slot.

The final answer will probably be something simpler, but a motion control prototype would be pretty cool.
  • The plot thickens... after a bit of internets sluthing I found this:

It's easy to miss but see what's on the table in front of all of that dev equipment?  This seems to be related to "project dolphin".  The case that this is proto/dev hardware strengthens.

    EDIT

And here's a different angle, I think taken from the same guy. Unfortunately Imgrum us a dead end.  I have no clue what that site is even about. :/

  • Hmm,the gamecube one looks like it might be for a gdev or gbox as the wii did start out on the gamecube.

  • Now I'm wondering what secret is on the PS2 HDD since this probably came from some developer.
  • the sensor bar is wii dev equipment.

did you find this in sac? thats a weird place for dev equipment to show up.
  • You can access the HDD content to see what is on it. Shouldn't be too hard and you don't need a ps2, although you could try that.

Exactly what I'm thinking. Now I have to stay subbed on here. I have to know what's on that drive!
  • Based on intuition from things I've read, I have always believed that the Wii remote started development as a Gamecube accessory specifically for Chibi Robo before they decided to base a whole new console on the pointer remote idea (and added motion accelerometers and such).

You can kinda tell that Microsoft had been developing Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts with some kind of pointer remote as a response to the success of the Wii, but the game ultimately used a standard controller and Microsoft released Kinect instead of making a motion controller.

    It's almost certainly this.

Hopefully a pointer wand and early Chibi Robo build surfaces

  • Thanks for the info guys! Very cool to confirm it's dev stuff as that's what I thought when I saw it.

What is the easiest way to check what's on that PS2 Hard Drive?

if its a standard sata or ide connection get a hdd to usb converter and load it up in linux and see if it will reconize it

its possible that the drive has a custom format that cant be read
