Help! Secret of Mana 2 repro won't start !

I got a repro copy of secret of mana 2 for my birthday a while ago and just now had the time to fire it up and dig in. When I went to play it thought the screen remained black after turning the power on. I tried everything I could and came to the conclusion that it was my cart and not the TV or system (other repros fired up just fine ). I tried cleaning it a few times and got it to actually turn on sporadically every few tries but most times it either had a maroon screen or it'd get to the "squaresoft" screen and then flicker and either reset or go black .

I'd love to try and have fishyfacegames.com send me a new copy to replace this damaged one but I don't think they'd come through, so I need to try and fix ir myself. I don't know what goes into making a game but I did take the cart apart and it looks like to board is clean, I tact and that nothing is damaged, so if I had to guess something is either loose or is misfiring.

Can anyone help with this ? Any other tips or suggestions ? Would love to try and get this going.

Thanks in advance for your time and support

  • You "don't think they'd come through"? Have you tried contacting them? Why would you assume that they'd refuse to help you out if the game was purchased from them and doesn't work?
  • Can you post pictures of the board? Wondering what kind of boards they use to make their games.

Fishy makes some great looking products but I have never ordered from them so I cannot speak to their customer service but I would definitely say contact them first, if they are not able to help you out I would be willing to take a look at it.

Edit: Hmm looks like the last update was on May 25, 2016 and the only thing on their page is labels.  It appears they may no longer be selling carts.

Like the above poster noted it doesn't look like they do games anymore, I received it as a gift a while ago and the person I received it from doesn't have the confirmation email so there's no real proof from my end - I've had bad experiences with this kinda stuff. I'll still reach out to them but am tempering my expectations and am happy to try and fix it myself before needing to purchase a new one. :/

I'll shoot you an PM with my email, you could also post board pics here that way it might help someone else that might run into a similar issue.
  • Dude, just email them. Trust me, they'll get you sorted out.

That said, sounds like a dirty console.  If a cart ain't working properly, then it isn't going to switch between booting up and then not.

Depending on when he bought it, the board is either one of Mark's, or from Paul.
  • I emailed them yesterday with no response, hoping they get back to me though !

The console is fine, every other game I put into it starts up with no issue, repro or not

Dude, yesterday was Sunday.  He does this on the side.  He doesn't have 24/7 CSR reps.  Give it a couple of days.

Got the return today.  Just a heads-up, I didn’t make this game.

Not my label designs, dirty used cart shell, and a very poorly designed Callan Brown knockoff PCB board.

That said, I fixed it anyway. In addition to a really poor board design, the solder joints were terribly weak.  Reflowed it and it works fine as long as it’s in a cartridge shell.  The contact pins are able to be bridged if not very carefully inserted into the snes without the cartridge shell.  It might be possible to short it with the shell as well, but I didn’t have that problem. If you do, try wiggling it to the left or right inside the cart port a bit and retry. Like I said, poor design. Just be aware of this and you shouldn’t have any other problems with the game (hopefully).

I can post board pics if you’d like. You’ll laugh when you see them.

  • He send me pics in an email, glad that it is not one that you made. Everything I have seen of your looks like excellent quality but that board is the worst one you can get.

I would still suggest replacing the board because that one does not have any capacitors on it at all, even on the save circuit and the games that I have bought that came on those boards would not hold a save very long even with a new battery. Plus the board is auto routed with the CIC near the top of the board so on older revisions of the SNES you will get cross talk on the CIC lines and it will cause the game to cut out randomly.

    Hey Fishy,

My apologies if it wasn't your game, as I mentioned I got it as a gift and it sounds like the gift giver got this order confused with another one.  I am beyond appreciative for you fixing it anyway despite it not being a game you created so thank you!

  • Sure thing. Will send you an email with details about getting it sent back to you.
  • Posting to say I appreciate seeing the customer service. Good stuff.
  • He's been helpful thus far, just waiting to wrap things up with fishy
  • Lmao - it starts with a "don't think they will come through" to "they were fucking badass and helped fix a shitty repro someone else made".

When someone does you a favor out of ZERO obligation, it's customary to be grateful, not skeptical.
