Question about partial refund on ebay

I recently bought a lot of games on ebay for 100, it came with some good games. The seller stated that one of the games didn't work, about a 2 dollar game, and I was fine with that, but when I recieved it the game he stated didn't work did, but another 15 dollar game that he said was fine is completely dead, no response at all. I've asked for a partial refund of 5 to take it to a friend to see if they can get it working for cheap. The seller bascially said no because he stated that in his auction he said one of the games wasn't working and he accidentally put down the wrong one. The only way he says he'll refund me is if I send everything back at my own cost and he'll refund the whole purchase, but I definitly don't want to do that as I'm happy with everything else. Should I open a case asking for a refund of 5? Never really opeend a case before so not really sure what ebay will say. Thanks for your guys' help.

  • Item not as described. Send it all back. You'll get all of your money back, and the seller will pay return shipping.
  • Right but I'd rather just get 5 dollars and move on, is that possible or should I just forget about the 5 dollars.
  • Can't really enforce a partial refund.
  • I don't do lots of deals and returns on eBay... but, personally, if you're only concerned about $5 in a $100 transaction I would just take it as a loss.
  • Okay, thanks, I'll probably just forget about it then.
  • I think that's the right call. Put yourself in the seller's shoes for a second. They sold a lot that they think is described pretty well. If you're not happy then send it back. If you are, keep it. Don't worry about a couple of dollars either way.
  • Man, you're Tom Cruise, what five bucks really means to effin Tom Cruise?
  • Seller knows they made a mistake by saying the wrong title. You are being extremely reasonable asking for only 1/3 of that game's value back. If the seller expects there to be no consequences for their mistake, they are ignorant, and it's not your job to protect them. Perhaps you should leave neutral or negative feedback for item not as described, but don't say it's because they wouldn't refund you $5.

I seem to be the only one siding with you...I think it's absurd that you should have to just deal with the seller's mistake when you're offering them a perfectly reasonable solution. It's unrealistic to expect you to return the whole lot over this unless that's the primary game you wanted, and it's even sillier to think there should be no consequences for making a mistake. You really aren't asking for much. I'm very curious about the seller's level of experience and if they sell many video games because this customer service opportunity seems like a nice, slow pitch to them.
  • Yeah the guy basically wouldn't do anything about it so I just moved on, I though I was being reasonable but whatever. It's not really about the 5 dollars too much, it's more about howI except to recieve the goods as advertised and I find it sad someone can't follow through and realize they made a mistake.
  • Yeah, I don't think it's unreasonable to say 'Can I just get $5 back.' But if they won't do that and you have to lose the whole lot... It just sounds easier to take a small loss on a lot you spent that much on. Sometimes I get a game in a lot that doesn't boot up. It sucks, yeah... but depending on how much I spent and how I feel about that game I just take it as a part of the collecting game. And if you've got a friend that can fix it for cheap like you said? It's inconvenient, sure, but easier than trying to deal with someone that doesn't want to meet you any part of the way.
  • This might be one of the rare occasions I'd leave a neutral or negative feedback.

I think it would be perfectly reasonable on the seller's part to help you out and kick you back the partial refund, especially if he admitted he made the mistake.  It sounds like he's pulling the "send it all back" thing as a bluff, figuring you wont bother doing that and just move on (in which he was right).  Just keep the stuff, take the loss, and leave a negative to the guy for being a not so great seller.
  • You gotta call his bluff.

You say, "Fine, I'll do a full return through eBay for not as described. Ebay buyer protection will cover me and you'll have to cover the return shipping."

You don't ask, you tell. If you filed the claim through eBay that is what would happen. And if it was a lot of games, shipping is probably $10 or so. He'll eat $10 and have to resell. Or, he could just refund that $5 to you and call it a day. You have to call his bluff.
  • Personally not worth the effort for $5 imo if your happy regardless.

If i was the seller id gladly give you the $5 if you asked politely...guess this guy likes dealing with returns.
  • This could be one of those sweet times you focus and redirect all your minor frustrations from various transactions and let the seller experience the full force of your orgasmic release of negative feedback

edit:  Don't say anything about the feedback being in response to the lack of partial refund though.  Seller could then get it removed, claiming feedback extortion.

Ebay will just remove the negative feedback anyway. The seller could appeal and Ebay could just look at the conversation and notice the request for a refund.
