I myself have looked into this in the past, to try and avoid the $100USD + shipping fee for a 40LBS package. Curious to hear if anyone else has a different solution. A computer tower sounds insanely heavy though..
Depending on weight and size, you don't have too many options via USPS. A 20# package via USPS is around $93 USD. If you ship the same via UPS, it's around $50 from their quoting software.
A large flat rate to Canada is $63 via USPS which could work if it fits and weighs under 20#. So I'd recommend calling your local UPS store with your item all packaged up and weighed out so you have the appropriate information for a quote from them. It seems like the cheaper option from a little online sleuthing and what I've shipped before.
I shipped 2 massive packages of N64 goods to Canada via USPS - was a bit pricey but went very smooth. I'd probably take the same route, especially reading the thread recently with the crazy high tariff charges or whatever it was.

It's so messed up, there's zero consistency with CDN customs in our experiences. We had a seller accidentally declare full value on an Earthbound CIB, but ended up paying nothing when it came. But the week prior we get a parcel from Ohio with $150 declared value, and had to pay $20CDN in fees.
You would think it would have to do with the HS code, but it doesn't.
If you're near the border, you could try having it shipped to one of the many package receiving businesses that exist in all US border cities, then drive across to pick it up. Avoids all the international charges that way. If you're not near the border but know someone who is, maybe you could sweet talk them into picking it up and forwarding it to you.

What is the best/most economical way to ship a computer tower to Canada?

Finally, someone jumps on board with the trebuchet idea! Vacuum seal the package, bubble wrap the outside and let er launch into a lake. Done.
