Fixing some faulty NES carts

Hi folks!

I’ve got a bit of a query regarding some NES games I purchased recently. I’ve bought a lot of carts and managed to rescue quite a few of them with rubbing alcohol and a good clean, however a recent batch are giving me some problems. There are 6 that cause the console to blink on and off (during the times the game will be on it usually displays the starting screen, so the console is obviously picking up something). My question is, does anyone think this is something that can be rectified and I should continue cleaning? I have to say that no amount of cleaning thus far seems to have changed much. It could be the console pin, but it’s strange that these games are so consistent, they’ve never worked no matter what I’ve done (I also tested a couple of a less reliable Nes and got the same issue).

Or does anyone have any other suggestions? Would really appreciate any help. Thanks for your time!

  • the blinking is caused by the lockout chip not getting a good signal. the lockout is isolated from the game data, so it's possible the system can load the game fine but the lockout can't talk to the cart so it's constantly resetting.

    your best options are

    1. disable the lockout chip in the console.

    2. clean the pins inside the console.

    3. clean the lockout pins on the cart really well.

#3 alone might not do it if the pins in the console aren't in top shape but it's a place to start. the lockout pins will be toward the edge of the cart (don't remember which offhand). make sure the 3 pins closest to each edge, top and bottom, are clean.

you might also need a better cleaning substance for your carts. look into ceramic stovetop cleaner.
  • Get a blinking light win. Install it. Profit.
  • Disabling the lockout chip takes only a few minutes and will increase your success. When the console blinks but displays the game for a brief moment then lockout chip is thinking your game is a bootleg.
  • Thanks everyone. It's strange but I tried all of them on a different console and had the same issue. Clearly they all have some wear to that section of the contacts. Or they are bootlegs!! Don't think they are though having taken them apart
