It is your lucky day my friend I have the original box art painting for contra (see attached image, actual pic of painting) and I will only take $35k USD (no fake Canada money as others have mentioned) for it. PM me and we can work out the deets. I got this at a lawnmower show in Tallahassee so you know it is legit (also check my NA feedback - 100% positive). In all seriousness good luck with the hunt!
Anyways. Some black and white line art like comic art goes for higher prices and is far easier to recreate. Still doesn't happen for all sorts of reasons. Occasionally some people seem to have an idea that its easy to fake... its not. Not when something is one of a kind and published. You have chain of ownership and you have the published art. If you did recreate it or try to it would never be a 100% match. Even when the original artist (same hand) does a recreation its never perfect. The elbow is 5 degrees off or the eyes aren't quite the same, or whatever. When there is a published comparison, the piece can be scrutinized in comparison in every possible way. Down to the speck above the eyebrow, or whatever.
Think about it for a sec. Where would you even get unused 1987 vintage illustration board to fake it on? Its not like there is a place to go to buy 1987 era supplies in bulk.
Its immeasurably easier to reseal video games, or create fake boards, whatever. Heck its probably a lot easier to fake (unpublished) fine art.

People are much less likely to fake something that is truly one of a kind. Why go to the trouble when it could be easily proven fake? And when you are talking about this kind of money, creating a fake could land you in serious trouble.
It's much easier to fake something that was made in the thousands and has a much larger audience of people who are less likely to identify a fake. Plus much less chance of getting into trouble.
That doesn't mean it can't be done. It's just much less likely.
Well, that's exactly right. With all the millions of dollars exchanged in illustration art, I've never heard of a convincing fake. Its extraordinarily rare to even hear of attempts (when it comes to published art). Too hard to do, too easy to get in trouble for trying.
The fakes that you do see are typically things like.... Charles Schulz or Dr Suess unpublished drawings to fans for example. Simple to recreate, black and white, good dollar value, harder to prove or disprove as fake if you aren't really educated in the artist.
Here's an obviously fake Schulz from Ebay ($180 starting bid looking for suckers).
That kind of stuff gets faked, and unsuccessfully (unless you consider getting 10% of FMV from a sucker to be a success).
An actual published Peanuts though, as much as a target for fakes as Schulz is, you don't often see. The real thing might be owned by the family museum, or by a collector, and they might speak up. Or someone will notice its off, and you could earn jail time for your attempt at that $25,000 - $100,000.
If you find the Contra art for a price that you would consider reasonable and affordable would you keep it or sell it to Bronty?
I think Dan knows my answer.
Wonder if anyone else here would keep it with this bounty now in place?
I would definitely sell it. As cool as it would be to have that, the Contra art just doesn't mean as much to me as it would to others. One piece I would be interested in is in my avatar. Although I dont' know much about it outside of who drew it and who inspired it.
well the text / font wouldn't be on the art, but yeah, its cool !
Aw, man. That's as much a part of it as everything else.
Meh. Trust me, after a while you could give a fuck about the logo. To me, its much more exciting seeing what the logo was hiding! (or just as cool, the part of the art at the edges that got cropped on the published version)
Can't speak to all the cultural differences but on a corporate level American companies mostly never gave a fuck whereas the Japanese companies kept strict control over the art

Yeah, this is so true. It is crazy how much art is cropped off and also hidden behind the title on box art. I used to think not having a title on a game cover would be weird but it's much more exciting seeing what was originally hidden.

And here's a real one from an auction house which sold for 2500 10 years ago, maybe double or more today:

And those are black and white simple drawings that you could lightbox and trace. Its exponentially harder with painted material or more complex work.

I'd sell it. I'm not that big on Contra to keep the art.
Now if it were Gun Nac or something, he'd have to fight me in the Thunderdome for it.

Gun Nac would be sweet. A solid #2 to Stinger in the realm of shooters battling ridiculous things covers.
( I see your carrots and raise you clothes hangers!)

I love the whole layout. The ridiculousness, the colors (black/orange/silver), the font.

Japanese stuff is just impossible though, sadly. The corps have an iron grip on everything.
They're not too keen on preserving things either, compared to folk in the west I'm afraid.

Hey now....
Man Deniz you're throwing money around like "wata"
Subtle....like a small leak of dripping wata all over your art albums. Drip....drip....

5K and a copy of your birth certificate please.
I'm assuming that you are wanting to purchase the original artwork for the box art.
i don't think that's what he wants.
