I have an erection while throwing up in my mouth a little.

  • Did Konami say what kind of person took it by chance? An employee? A stock holder? Charity?
  • Some like Deal Donkey I don't think fully understand box art and the original paintings that made the box art possible. For me and many others, back in the day, we chose games based on box art. I didn't know what T&C Surf Designs was but I remember picking it over Mega Man because of the box art. It was the first game my brother and I purchased. The game holds a special place when it comes to collecting Original Nintendo games. It is one box art painting I would love to hang on my wall. I would assume if we all could afford a original box art painting to a favorite game, we would like to make it happen if we could afford to. Fortunately Surf Designs and many don't fall in the same realm as a Contra.

    Donkey is just jealous.

I mean i'm jealous too, but I just hide it better

Bronty is a great dude that has done a lot for this site over the years, im excited to see how this search turns out.
  • Yeah I'm also excited to see how this turns out. And also just seeing the art itself, if Dan posts it. I'm just happy someone is out there trying to save these pieces of gaming history.

Who wouldn't be jealous! But i am truly happy for Dan, i hope he gets his hands on this one. I can't see it going into the hands of a more deserving person.

This may be jumping the gun, but have you thought of where you would display this Dan??
  • Fantastic Bronty, I'd love for you to land this and then share snaps. Hope it's out there somewhere.

Anyone got a lead on the original art for Super Mario Bros 2?

    "It belongs in a museum!"

    "So do you!".

I would love to see this painting turn up if for no other reason than to get the backstory on where it has been all this time.
  • So with this bounty thrown out there, it begs the question... What would be a reasonable offer for the original art to another NES game, except one that basically no one cares about? For example something like Break Time. (but not neccessarily that, just the same latter era and level of desirability). Obviously its easy to say Contra is worth a lot but where would something on the far lower end of the scale end up value wise?

I forget who posted it, but i know another NA member traded a stadium events cart for the panic restaurant original artwork. I understand where you are coming from Bronty. I don’t personally collect box art, but it is beautiful and certainly a special one of a kind item.

Pretty sure Bronty was the one who traded for the Panic Restaurant art, and it was a Sealed SE, not a cart only SE.
  • Has this reached out to other sites yet?

Wow! That's one helluva trade. Great for both parties involved in my opinion. This has got me very curious about the whole scene of cover art collections and other videogame art in general. I feel like this post, by itself, is giving many more people ideas of what it is to be a videogame collector. There are so many sub-genres of collecting and this is a great one!

Thanks Jone. Yes that’s right. I love that Panic Restuarant art.

Well, the artist for Break Time is Mark Watts.    He only did the one NES cover, but he did do the packaging artwork for g1 Shockwave, Jetfire, and the Decepticons.    I’ll reserve my own judgement but I have heard several collectors describe him as hard to deal with.    One spoke of driving across several states to conclude a deal for some of that transformer art only to be told that the deal was off once he was there in person.    That and a couple other things turned me off, but it believe he still has break time and his ask the last time I checked was 5k.   I think that’s a bit high and that 3-4 would be more realistic

  • Do you know the area that the artists was from? I'm assuming he was from the UK based on all the other works he's done. Would it be possible to find the city he was living in when he sold it and start posting local ads for the area? I'd imagine if it was sold in the 80s it probably didn't get too far. Just a thought.

Also, while it's not necessarily "art", I'd love to own the original photo used for anticipation!

    Good luck with your search!!
  • thanks for the suggestion. Anticipation is pretty brilliant   I suppose that negative might be out there somewhere!

  • ^ the green sig on the right hand side below the 8 ball is actually visible on the published box if you look close enough
  • Only about 10% of the art for the NES console is confirmed to exist in private hands. Everything else is corporate, or japanese and corporate, or destroyed, or unknown. :/    And lets not forget probably 10% that are photos and logos and such, like anticipation, double dare, tecmo bowl, ice hockey, jeopardy, etc etc etc.    Unfortunately there's a lot more unavailable, than available, but I suppose its a minor miracle there are any available to private hands at all.    Certainly if I was running a software company I wouldn't be letting the originals out of my sight, and I'd be requiring in the contracts that ownership stay with the software house.    So, I guess the glass half full approach is "there's 10% out there!!!"

Hmmm that is quite interesting.  So even though its hard to get it is in fact available.

((And a bit OT but although Break Time is a good billiards implementation overall, the actual breaking in the game is quite poorly implemented (ironic considering the title of the game).))

that one is (as far as I know), but its priced a bit too high IMO compared to today's market value, and this was years ago so even higher in relation to FMV then, IMO.

And, hands up everyone who's excited about sending 5k to someone that apprarently turned another guy aside at his door, changed prices midstream, etc etc.   I'm just turned fully off on that one.   Buyatari mentioned in another thread that the one thing that can turn him off these days on something is the seller.    I feel the same way.    I haven't dealt with him so the criticism may be unfair on my part but I heard enough from others who attempted to buy transformers art, that I just choose to simply pass on it altogether.    Its funny that you happened to ask about that particular one.

  • Grats on getting featured in Kotaku news, Bronty.

Yeah, I'd be a little weirded out if I walked in someone's place and saw this on the wall.
