Aftermarket 72-pin NES issues/Controller question

I've been having some issues with my NES, so I decided to pick up a "new" one on eBay (one by Culsams I think).  I got everything installed, but it seems like the game doesn't go into the 72-pin receiver without slightly depressing the tray.

Also, I've noticed that I have to wiggle the cartridge around abit to get the game to not give me a red screen.  Not sure if that's a connector issue or what.

Any tips/suggestions on how to get my NES working "perfectly"?

  • One solution is to get blinking light win. I've heard a lot of people like it. I've personally never replaced a pin connector so I know nothing about aftermarket ones.
  • If a mod sees this, can this be moved to "Collector's Corner"? I was browsing here and must have posted it in the wrong spot.

    As you wish

  • The only aftermarket connector worth using is the blinking light win. Otherwise, the aftermarket ones are all junk. Some are so tight they only work in the up position. They all wear faster than the real thing. Some of them are abrasive to the carts.
  • Thanks for moving my thread!

And I'll look into the Blinking Light Win.

My system works SOMETIMES, but I've been getting red screens a lot, and that's a ton of fun. I can't figure out what the cause is, either.
  • The Blinking Light Win is the only pin connector to use. Obviously we have no idea if it will stand the test of time, as it's only been around a few years. But it probably will

I hope you saved your original pin connector, they usually can be coaxed back into working order and are leagues better than the shitty aftermarket connectors.

The easiest way to coax a pin connector back to life is to let it sit in a pot of boiling water. I suggest reading this classic NA thread: http://nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=7&threadid=63483

Alternatively or in addition to the above, you can try spraying electrical contact such as De-Oxit onto the pin connector to clean and dissolve any corrosion on the pins.

  • Another vote for blinking light Win... Mine works excellently
  • Another satisfied customer as well with the blinking light win, add the Nes HDMI kit and bam you have the ultimate toaster
  • I just stay original stock parts. When they get bad, I get out a towel, a pot, and some boiling water along with an old cleaning kit cart. The heat pulls away so much garbage that it's shocking when they're really bad and it firms up the pins so much they're like new if not better as sometimes even the original part will get snug enough you may not need to lock it down to work but they're not abrasive garbage either that'll mess up a cart.
  • Blinking light win. The modded NES i got came with one, and it is truly amazing how well that thing works.
  • Blinking light win. I don't use it but I heard its good.

  • Thanks for the suggestions.

I'll look into a Blinking Light Win eventually...My current one seems to be working for the moment (but it's tight and requires a bit of cart shifting to get going).

New question, same thread. Didn't want to clog the forum...

My controllers are acting funky. A buttons are not responding regularly. That's a LOT of fun when playing something like Tetris or Mega Man! So I opened and cleaned them up, but they're still doing it. Are there any good controllers out there I can buy? Or parts to replace the pads or rubber contacts?
  • People on ebay in the US (not fake US Chinese drop ship) like mortoff games/nintendo repair shop do sell replacement pads as far as I can remember as they seem to have perfect to near perfect copies of all sorts of original stuff at really fair prices. You may just have some rotten pads on those old controllers as they do degrade, especially if stuff ever got in there to rot away at it. I've never had an original I had bite it, but second hand I've seen rot from general abuse mess up the contacts and the rubber supports making them rot right off.
  • I second everything VmprHntrD and teh lurv has said. If you dont have your original pin connector you can get one on eBay for a decent price. I have bought from this guy before with good results.

If you do have the original, boil it and after it has dried and cooled, you can take a safety pin and bend all the pins back out to get better connection on your game, it takes a little practice but works great afterwards.

I second the boiling tip.  I did this back a couple years ago and it fixed all my issues.  I wasn't part of NA then, I used the instructions from the article below.

  • I wasn't aware of the Blinking Light Win connector. I'd like to try one, one of these days. I used some ones off of ebay and I wasn't crazy bout them but they worked. They did grip the cart pretty tight but after awhile of using them they loosened up.

    My thoughts:

I'm not a fan of the idea of the BLW. I like to keep them original.

I would like to echo the "go to your original NES and boil/bend the pins" sentiment. (God knows what the hell that guy did to this "new" one you bought.). I assume yours is an original...? Boil and bend them pins!

  • I'm sure the BLW works very well but it's very unnecessary if you ask me. A refurbished original pin connector will work just as well. Remember to clean the contacts on the board where the pin goes on too. As for your controllers not working, I'd bet it's the controller ports.
