40 Winks N64 Kickstarter Release by Piko
I didn't see a topic for this...I just got the email announcement for the release of 40 Winks, which is cool because they tout is as the first official (since they bought the IP) n64 release since the lifespan of the system.

Any interest?

Does anyone know if a rom is already available online for this game?
I'm way more interested in the OOT hack with Masterquest or the Goldfinger hack of Goldeneye, even those aren't "official". Probably way better quality too.
Nintendo is not affiliated with this at all, so hard to say "first official release". Maybe he owns the IP but I don't see this getting funds.

Yeah this wreaks of cash grab, while those others sound like labors of love.

Right, but it's one of those things that sounds cool, so a marketer's gonna say it
Sometimes Kickstarter seems like a preorder system instead of funding an otherwise unobtainable project.
That's how I'm going to utilize it when it comes time to launch my book. Why overorder, or underprint when I can have the exact quantity of books I need? In both scenarios it's literally throwing money away.

There's also hacks of Super Mario 64 out that look really nice. Only a matter of time before they get released on a cart

Fair enough. It sounds like it eliminates a lot of uncertainty.

As a collector, I'd say they all fall into the same category to me. Either it was produced during the lifespan of the system or it wasn't.

Technically he touted it as the first new SNES game to be released . Classic Piko typos.
"As you may know already, Piko Interactive likes to be the first to do a lot of things. We were the first to release a SNES game back in 2013 after years of the console being discontinued, now we would like to be the first to officially release a NEW SNES game!"

Wasn't the SNES X-mas 2011 cartridge out before 2013?
Just curious, what do people have against piko exactly? I know it can be a bit much seeing all the claims of first this and "official" that, but otherwise he's just making releases of stuff previously not available on cartridge. Reproductions are universally loved here yet this is an exception somehow? Someone bring me up to speed.
He has done a bunch of shady stuff, tried to backdoor another member out of a prototype amongst other things.
I also think he was buying old IPs out from underneath people or something like that.

I'm out of the loop. Do you have a link?
Just for disclosure, I'm the original translator for Barver Battle which he's planning to do a cartridge release of and have been in intermittent contact with him for a few years now, so I'm just trying to feel out what the real issue is. Backdooring sucks, I'll give you that. The only other example I've seen so far that rubbed someone the wrong way was a dev on the SpritesMind forum who way overvalued how much their project was worth and got pissed at what they thought was a super lowball seal from piko for distribution.
How do you buy an IP "out from underneath" someone? Either the IP owner willingly sells it or they don't. He just made a higher offer than someone else who wanted it?

Im not clear on the whole IP thing- might not be a big deal.
Poke around a bit and you will see what rules wee broken- just because you didn’t see something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
Good luck on your game release.

Was that when the member here owned it though? I don't remember the guy's name, but the one who started the company sold it, didn't he?

Im not going to speak on the IP thing because I don’t know the whole story.

I understand, I just meant I was curious if the anti-Piko sentiment was due to the founder and not the current owner.
The association with him will put off many buyers and could make a cool project get no recognition, like Quest Forge. The history is long enough that any threads like this on many forums devolve into his business practices instead of the product.
I think his comment was first official N64 cart release since the era. With what you see so far of these aftermarket N64 games being all copy cats of the expensive stuff, this would be a first official release since he owns the game and is putting it on a cart that works on the system although obviously unlicensed.
Maybe the dumb quote hate the player not the game applies here.
I remember the backdooring story because people got hot he tried to scoop a game after it had sold on ebay offering up more money which is shady. But anything else people getting cranky over seems pretty equally shady too. Like it or not the clown is above board when it comes to those game releases as he appears to either buy the games, buy the IP entirely, or buys a license for a period or perpetuity to peddle a game all with legal contracts. If he so happens to piss off someone selling modern bootlegs of games he ends up buying the rights to and shuts them down, then that's sour grapes of a crook that doesn't deserve attention.

16 Bit Xmas 2012 was too.
Don't see this being funded? It's already over the 20000 requested before the first 24 hours were up. Seems even if there is history here (and there is) to be pretty cheap and petty to just trash on the game even if Piko is either liked or hated around here depending who you ask. It was a solid game that got a PS1 release and this is the complete lost N64 version that gets both a cart or a cheapo Steam release. Even if you wish him ruin or don't want him getting much if any money, there are always future mandatory steam sales that could drive the game into a 50-75% off sale to try it on steep discount.

He stole BSNES from Byuu and his email correspondence shows he was unremorseful.

You might have to explain what that is. Is the BSNES a program or an object and how did he steal it?
