I guess that's the difference between spending $1000 for the "real original untouched" proto, and getting a free ROM (or a cheap repro). I'm sure you're not a customer of the re-released stuff, so are you in the market for the big-ticket originals then?
It wasn't exactly free for those who paid a $20 contribution for the rom... the prototype would never be worth 1500 on the market so I'd say it was well paid by those who chipped in. Therefore, anyone who helped make the dump happen should be able to get an unedited dump.
And I will gladly take over the payment for anyone who is outraged at the couple seconds they have to look at that text. Send me an email and I will pay NGD so he can refund your payment, avoiding any PayPal fees.
For people who didn't contribute, 30 seconds with a hex editor will fix any problems.
I am not suprised about the text. I don't care! I only dropped the cash because the community has been good to me and the community was looking for help I probably wont even play it
I'm fairly certain that it was discussed that there would be some sort of watermark. Personally I'm glad.. it only directs more people to NA, and that should be a good thing.
What's the deal with this game? Is it some game that just never got released and now someone dug it up and made repros? Also, is the game intended for NES or SNES? Thanks.
Power Punch II was supposed to be the sequel to Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, but Mike Tyson was removed from the title due to his fallout with Nintendo. The prototype "Mike Tyson's Intergalactic Power Punch" still existed, and now we finally have a chance to play it.
nesworld: you may be happy that Lost Levels did not watermark the releases, but they should have because it affects copies from being all over the place and keeps the value of the original somewhat intact.
The one who has been affected by value of those releases most is myself since I own 90% of the unreleased prototypes out there in ROM searches.
I don't want this to end up like Atari protos where someone (ANYONE) can make copies and you can't tell the difference, but this whole "would not fetch so and so on the open market" is silly because there really is no place to list the thing unless you "hide" names and not call them prototypes on eBay. Open market I would probably own every single one of things and never get them dumped at all, but this is just to make sure repros are not being passed off as the REAL THING. That's all.
Honestly, there are so many repros out there of the other stuff that the originals really are practically worthless. It's a smidgen of TEXT, LOL. You can't make everyone happy it seems.
And again, this was mentioned in the original thread. Anything dumped from my end needs the legal info removed. That's it. Really simple. It was known well beforehand this was going to happen, and any future releases will have a line of text removed and nothing else.
I first want to thank Mr. NationalGameDepot and everyone who donated. Thanks, guys.
I side with nesworld3 (Martin?) on this. $1,500 is a lot, probably more than the value of the cart, itself. The thing should be released unaltered to the people who chipped in. I'm not bitching about the watermark, because I didn't contribute, but I'm just stating the opinion that I think those who did should be more concerned about this.
Let's be perfectly clear and honest with ourselves: it's not so much over any worry about someone trying to sell a repro as the original to prevent unforunate scams, but for the sake of the cart owner so that he can still say he owns the unaltered original when/if he decides to sell it, which will net him even more money. Not saying this is wrong. This is smart business on the owner's behalf. But you guys and gals who contributed should look at your $20 in a business model sort of way, too. You bought a share in this game. This is yours to play and digitally own just as much as it's the cart owner's to play and physically own, unless there was some obligation of a watermark agreed upon by the donators before any donations were made. So let's keep the dancing around to the ballrooms, not the Nintendo Entertainment System messageboards. This is Mike Tyson boxing space alien fighters, for God's sake. This is serious business.
I took bunnyboy's advice. If anyone wants an non-watermarked ROM, PM me. I hope that I'm not breaking any rules by saying this. RetroZone is awesome. Nintendo Age is awesome.
Also, this is completely off-topic, but if anyone has a CopyNES or a Genesis dumper, I have a bunch of NES protos I would like to publically release and one unreleased Genesis game that I'd also like to get out there. The only CIB release I will ever work to release is, if I ever find it, a beta of Color A Dinosaur. Maybe with a little plastic dinosaur inside. All others will be free. You can quote me on that. "You will only have to pay to play Color A Dinosaur."
I think it's kinda funny that people are in here (NintendoAge) and complaining about a game with a minor change that is promoting the very site you're complaining on. NA came together to do the release - not one person. NA is releasing the proto to the masses. NA can get some of the credit. If you don't like it - and you didn't donate, which seems to be the case for most of the complainers, don't download the FREE ROM.
This was all mentioned early on in the donation process. I really don't understand the big deal anyways. It was seriously like 2 tiny lines of text that don't affect the game play whatsoever. It promotes the site as a whole for releasing games and being a good community, and I really don't see why anyone would really be so concerned over some slightly modified text.
Michael I really hope you don't start passing off altered files to people. Esp if you altered them and don't know exactly what was there in the first place. All we need is a bunch of altered ROMs being passed off as the real thing in different stages of production....why can't people just leave well enough alone sometimes..geez :-/
I'm just happy to play the game. I like the fact that repros from like retrousb come in different colored carts, and for the added logos, because repros are supposed to be for the fans who can't afford to get their hands on the real deal.
Ever since I saw that Mario/Dunk Hunt box Uncle Tusk made, I've been worried somebody's going to start making boxes for their games and passing them off as the old originals. (I know Mario/Dunk Hunt never had a boxed release.)
Out of the very few protos I have (have had) I've contributed with, free of charge, 2 N64 roms, 4 SNES roms (1 unreleased game, Congo), 3 or so NES protos (1 unreleased, Escape from Atlantis, 1 semi unreleased - Poke Block). None of these were "marked" in any way, why? because it's just stupid in my oppinion...
Fair enough Martin. But your opinion doesn't have to be forced onto other people with protos. It was Dream's proto and it was released under his terms. Each person can choose how they want their stuff released, not everyone has to agree with it. Whether you agree or not doesn't really matter after the fact, what is done is done. Just be happy to have an unreleased gem to play that didn't cost you a red cent.
If the nay-sayers don't like the way it was done, then by all means raise the funds and release unaltered ROMs for other games. I won't be hurt a bit to get some new games to play

This is nice of you, but to the people requesting the rom - just keep in mind this isn't the "original dumped" version. Michael just hacked it himself, so it's just as "tainted" as the one freely available here. It's no more or less original.
Really all you've done, Michael, is give the repromakers who didn't donate a free ticket. Now they'll have a rom that has no lead back to the source of the dump. It's a victimless crime, really...but I'd like to think that NA and its contributing members deserve to have some mention in the ROM about the big dollars they put in.
I just played the ROMs Michael made, and they aren't even close to what the original ROM dump has, which just created another unnecessary set of ROMs and makes it even easier to pass of a fake one if people are so inclined....ugh.

I think were all missing the point here Dream wouldn't of realeased it period unless it was altered. point blank so thanks to the community effort from everyone who help donate and thank you dream for releasing it and thanks you Bunny for dumping it.
Like I said, it's to protect the validity of the real proto, that's all. It really should have been done a long time ago. And yes, my terms are simple. No legal information on my stuff, and NA on the screen.
Martin, we aren't in Cuba/China here. If you feel like giving away possessions, fine. If you spent nothing on them and gave them away, great. I don't have that luxury. I'm not giving away games I spent time/effort/loads of cash on for free. Why people seem to think that makes me a horder is beyond my comprehension. Almost all of my protos are out there sans 5 of them for NES now (unreleased I am speaking of, not released).
One of these days people will smarten up and get the Genesis/SNES stuff from me (oh wait, some people HAVE and that is why CIB released games are usually in the works)

edit to add play it that much
Edit: This is for NES.

By the way, five minutes after I post, I have like 5 PMs. Three of those from people who did donate.
It's not like a change was made to the actual game...

Jeez...as a donor, I'm disgusted that people who didn't even pony up for the project feel entitled to complain about the end result.
A bunch of us pooled together to get this released for the masses. Way to show your gratitude!
Yes, I am evil :-)

1. LOL at the first bold part of that statement.
2. As for the second. yeah he's officially an ass
3. Shut up.
