What does your woman think?

  • My wifes calls me a gamer geek for collecting, but she is so stinkin good at SMB1, 2, and 3 that she admittedly is better than me at it! So I can dish it back to her. In short she hates my collecting because it takes to much time, but she does like it when I sell something and gets to spend the money image

While this is a great idea in theory, I don't think it's that simple in reality.  If I can't even explain why I collect video games, then how in the world can I expect my girlfriend to understand?

Do I collect video games to relive my youth? Yes, but that only explains maybe 100 of the 500+ I have.

Do I collect video games to try new games?  Yes, but once again there are many games in my collection that I will probably NEVER play.

Do I collect video games to make money?  No, otherwise I'd strictly resell.

Do I collect video games just as a hobby that I enjoy?   Yes, but trying to explain "why I enjoy" this hobby is a lost cause and cannot be put into words (at least not by me).

Successful relationships are built on compromises.  I love absolutely everything about my girlfriend, from her looks and appearance to personality to her financial responsibility (she actually does not like to shop!!!!), with the only exception being that she doesn't understand my collecting passion.  Rather than be selfish and throw her to the curb because she isn't "real", I'd rather scale back my collection to what I can't live without and balance time between her and video games...

Just because only around 100 of the games were ones you had when you were young doesn't mean you're not doing it to re-live your youth. A big part of collecting is the hunt. The anticipation. Looking forward to that next big game you want. Just like when you were a kid looking at Nintendo Power counting the hours away until the next awesome release you kept reading about came.

When it comes to actually PLAYING all of them, that's not even entirely the point sometimes. But still, now you know that if you ever DO want to play it... You've got it. They ain't makin' Nintendo games anymore. If you didn't get it, who knows if you'd be able to twenty years from now. That's the archiving excuse. You're protecting the history of a media you love, same as any bibliophile or silent movie collector. And seeing all the games on your shelves, you feel like you've accomplished something.

And also, it's just a plain old passion. I probably know more about videogames then anything else, just because I've been in to them since I was very young. It's the same, I think, as someone who's really in to cars. You've always loved them, and you research their history, how they work, the different models, how to repair them... The big difference is you never see videogame magazines with spreads of sexy ladies posing with a gold NWC. image
  • I asked her " What word would you use to decribe my collecting habits?...."...She Replied..."Interesting"...lol
  • My wife married me, so she must love me, lol

  • My wife actually plays the games with me, so she is absolutely fine with it.

I think it is funny how one of our few female members teases us with even the thought of dirty pictures, LOL.  Well played Rachel

For me, this backfired as evidenced by my wife screaming with excitement every other ad while browsing Craigslist, "Honey, isn't World Class Track Meet the rare one!!!?!?!?" image

Well, she did come to Knoxville TN with you for he NAExpo so she can't be all that bad..  Give Nikki some credit...
  • lol, you guys...

She came because she likes to travel, and she had actually never been to Knoxvegas. You notice that she didn't even stop by the expo until it was over, just to pick me up. She is also a very supportive wife, and even though she can't stand video games, and that I have so many of them, she came.
  • ^^ Maybe she likes the rugged look you get when you are camped out in the house for months on end....?
  • my woman is not a big fan but understands why i do it... I love my NES stuff, but I love her more, so if push comes to shove she's the one stickin' around image
  • My GF Loves it haha, She gets all excited when I find good deals and goes with me to get stuff all the time, she said its like finding treasure! <--- hence why I love her <img src=/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> And shes addicted to SMB3. She said as long as I keep selling a few things here and there to pay for the collection im in the clear lol.
  • She hates it, but I hate her.

  • I currently have no woman, but you wouldn't believe how often girls want to get with me after I tell them I collect video games. It's my golden ticket...
