Words you always misspell

Are there words you struggle to spell correctly, that you can never remember where a letter goes in the word, or if it even has that letter? This thread is for you (and me)! What words do you struggle with?

  • Vacuum. I can't think of many English words with two consecutive u's.
  • "Separate" - I always think it's seperate and then MS Word yells at me.

Also, when I type super fast, I put "not" instead of "now" which doesn't make a lot of sense based on a QWERTY keyboard. However, I've done it a lot and in emails or wherever it makes a hell of a difference in the message sent lol.

I used to have this problem until 6th grade. I had a math teacher who would have us attach our graphs on a separate piece of paper. You had to write on your sheet that your graph was on a separate piece of paper. I wrote "seperate" on every assignment for a while, and when he returned the papers, I had gotten 1/2 off on all of those problems because I misspelled separate. Quickly learned the correct way in order to save my grade. Thanks, Mr. Kleist!

  • This is easy, because I have two people pointing them out to me over and over again.

    Separate

    Independent

    Dependent

    Apparent

    Nickelodeon
  • English is not my first language so I do struggle at times with various words, one that comes to mind is "definitely", I always tend to type it as "definetively".
  • I used to misspell "judgment" all the time. Then I got into law school and learned fast.

Yesterday I misspelled "nickle," so I guess that's one.
  • Canceled. I always put an extra L in there.

Also, License. Always spell it "liscence". Actually had to look up the spelling for the purpose of this post

Why are you writing Nickelodeon frequently? Just curious!

  • Why is it that Americans always spell colour wrong?

Oh, man. I misspell "conscious" all the time! Even though I know the difference, and use the mnemonic "con-science," I still flub 'em up between the different words and spellings.

    Damn you, Willaim the Conqueror.

If anything, we both spell it incorrectly. It's "colur."

Mr. Webster deliberately eliminated many superfluous letters when making his dictionary.

The "U" can cause pronunciation confusion because "color" should never sound like "sour."

It's "favor" in USA instead of "favour." My iPhone refused to let me type that just now with the "U" and forced all kinds of non-sensical autocorrections before I managed to get it to stick.

that is some interesting information that I am going to double cheque for accuracy
  • Restaurant, needed spell check just to write it here
  • This is what happens when schools stop teaching Latin and Greek.

Anyone who spells definitely as "defiantly" needs to be punched in the nads

No, this is what happens when schools pass rules like "no child left behind" and participation trophies. Why would anyone expect kids to put effort in when institutions have removed accountability and rewards poor performances?

Makes sense. I should've thought of your reviews. I was thinking you were at home and your wife/kids were critiquing your spelling of Nickelodeon.

As a European learning English, it's been a huge help also having studied Latin, and Greek to a lesser extent.

On a gaming related note, it's always confusing to see people writing "repo" instead of "repro", seeing as they're both short hand for completely different words. It can also be baffling to see so many confuse "then" and "than", especially native English speakers.

I slso struggle with "professional" sometimes.
When I was younger I had a hard time spelling "parallel" and "shepherd".
