Famicom decal kit arrived. Pics and impressions.

My decals arrived for my revision 3 1983 famicom restoration. I got them on within a few minutes and I must say I don't think anyone else out there is offering anything close to original as this so I highly recommend them. This console was yellowed so I used dupli-color vinyl spray paint from advance auto parts which I highly recommend. I chose it over retrobrite method because no worries about uneven color or the chemical in the plastic turning it yellow again in the future. Plus I think it's faster, easier, & cheaper. I also added a set of silicon pads to the order since they were just $5 more with the decal kit. I've not tried them yet but for the price why not. The family computer logo plate on my famicom was dinged so I removed it & cut a piece of heavy cardstock of the same thickness & glued it in place before applying the decal.

  • Nice job! Hopefully you will let the buyer know you did all of this if/when you decide to sell it.

Thanks. If I ever sold one I restored I would let them know. I read where someone tried to pass a square button famicom cib off as being new for $1200 and turns out he had painted it (done such a nice job it was tough to tell) and buyer ended up getting it for $400 but it did look really nice. I'll never sell this one because it's the oldest one I've been able to find (low serial number) and has the slick dust cover which it took me a lot of looking to find one and low and behold I found one really close number to this one with a slick dust cover as well. Both are revision 3's from summer of 1983. I added pics after getting controller decals on. I can also say the A and B button silicon I used from the kit works great. Other silicon was ok so I left originals in them but my A button original was tore & causing the button not to pop up far enough or at least fast enough. Works like new again now.

  • What was the purpose of putting cardstock under the logo plate? I've ordered a set of these decals for my less-than-stellar condition famicom but it hasn't arrived yet.

My logo plate was had a pretty bad dent on one side so I decided to pull it before vinyl spraying and underneath there's some holes which I think the vinyl sticker when placed down onto would be distorted over the holes and on top of that would be recessed and not look original. I just used a piece of white cardstock and a fine tipped led pencil to trace around the plate onto the cardstock and carefully cut it out exact size and used elmers glue all to hold it in place. This gave a perfect thickness and smoothness for the decal to go on. retroraiderjapan recommended not putting the vinyl down over the holes and suggested I used filler and sand it down smooth but I got the cardstock idea and it was so much easier.

  • That SNES answering machine thing is sick, bro. Awesome!
  • I have used them in the past and they are great and durable
  • Why ruin an original machine with fake add one though, especially an old one? I'd rather it be original, authentic, and a bit tattered than pristine and fake.
