Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III issues

So, I don't have the technical knowledge needed to diagnose my problems which is why I actually signed up in the first place. Here the issues I'm facing with a couple games as well as an overall issue with my SNES system.

I've googled my problems many times but haven't found my exact issue so hopefully this hasn't been answered here already. I'll be providing videos of what's going on through a link to a couple of facebook posts I made. (I hope there are no specific rules regarding posting links)

On Chrono Trigger: The title screen and menu show up just fine but playing the game itself is an issue because of the blue lines on the screen.

On Final Fantasy III: Bought this cart on Amazon for 60 bucks. Wondering if it's an easy fix or if I should be getting my money back. The issue here is that there are a few weird lines that seem to be displaying the bottom of the screen but they display at the top of the screen. And then in the video you'll notice that when I go to the menu it just does NOT show up at all, really. Then when I exit out the entire game glitches.

There is also an issue with the SNES console where the screen will blink whether the game is working or not. I'm unsure if this is because I'm using an hdtv or if there's something up with the console but I don't remember having this problem in the past. It's been a few months since I last used it. I don't have a working CRT to test on right now.

sounds like bad ram or bad ppu possibly.  is it only acting like this  with these two games? do you have any issues on any other games?  it could also be a bad cap or bad AC adaptor too.  try a diffrent AC adaptor

  • Would definitely recommend trying with another AC adapter yeah. It might not be the issue, but if it is, it's the easiest thing to fix, and you'd need to rule that out immediately. A two low voltage can cause all kinds of weird, unpredictable issues.
  • It is only these two games. The rest run fine with the exception of the blinky screen. I'll switch the adapter when I get home (at work right now) but just out of curiosity are there any videos or site tutorials you would recommend for a crash course in game/console repair?

Changed adapters and no dice. Is there a way for me to find out which of the other possibilities it is? What would bad ram/ppu/cap look like if I took apart the console?

well you will need a test cart to check ram and ppu  as for caps usually you can see a bad cap if you open up the console and look for leaking or bulgeing

  • Test Cart is in the mail. I'll probably open her up tomorrow to check for the bad cap if there is one. Thanks for the help, guys. I'll let you know what's going on when I find out.
  • Update: So I got my new tools in today (I realized I didn't have the proper screwdrivers) and took apart the system. I did not sea any leaking or bulging. Mostly just lots of dirt (and dead bugs...gross) which I removed and it helped a lot but did not fix my problem and I really went to town with the ultra duster. The metal plates are kinda filthy but the circuit boards are clean.

I can play Final Fantasy III now...kinda. I can walk around but as soon as I hit a battle it turns into a bad LSD trip and no text shows up on screen.

No real change on Chrono Trigger. the lines are more spread out and there are more of them but the lines were kinda random to begin with.

Still waiting on the test cart to arrive.
  • So I got the cart and I've used it to do the Burn In but only the bottom half of the results actually show on screen. I see something failed and it looks like its DMA but I can only catch a glimpse before it disappears
