Nintendo Power design contests, J. Scott Campbell, Lockarm, Nintendo Power Volume 200

Hi everyone,

I'm researching a feature about the NES homebrewing community. As part of my feature, I plan to talk about the Nintendo Power game design contest and its winner J. Scott Campbell. I reached out to Campbell to talk about the game...and his team referred me to volume 200 of the magazine. Apparently, he was intereviewed in that volume. Does anyone recall the interview and would like to talk about it? He's an amazing illustrator and the comics guy, but doesn't seem terribly invested in the old video game stuff, from what I've gathered.

I have my personal, tattered copy of Volume 6 (where the original art for Lockarm was published), but I don't recall which volume of the magazine in which the contest was initially advertised. Do any of you remember the contest? Did you submit your own designs? What about the contest NP held for the Mega Man game design (I want to say it was for Mega Man 6)? I'd love to hear from anyone about these experiences as well.

  • I meant to post this in EVERYTHING ELSE. Mods, can one of you move this for me, please? I'd certainly appreciate it.
  • Of course I remeber the contest. I drew some sketches but never submitted them. It was hugely disappointed that the winner never had his game made. Still disappointed to hear that he's not interested in finishing his game.
  • Do you still have any of those sketches? What was your game about? I'd love to hear about it! I agree; it's a shame Lockarm never got made. I wanted to ask J. Scott Campbell if he planned to revisit making the game with NES Maker.
