Glitchy Turbo Grafx 16

Hello everyone. I found a Turbo Grafix 16 in a barn that you can read on a post on Collector Corner and I am in the middle of getting it all clean and running. However, it powers on but have messed up graphics yet still plays the correct music and runs, kind of like when a NES games doesn't have the proper contacts with the NES.  Any suggestions in what to do beside continue cleaning the system?

  • Heh I've never seen a TG16 do that before. But I've also never seen a console that dirty
  • Keep cleaning I'd suspect and I would presume you cleaned the card slot anyway, but if not id wrap the hucard with a coffee fliter with a little and insert it and remove it a few times might hit with a little isopropyl on the filter and see it improves any, which I don't know how your running the video (rf or booster) but id look about there as well. I used a nes rf on mine which mine still has garbled graphics but kinda tweeking with the rf it improved drastically so something in the module is loose, have a pc engine now so I never fixed the t-16 but had plans using the pins in the back to make a KO booster with rca cables.

Dat be muh inputs, pretty sure someone with better knowledge will chime in soon enough.

I want to stress is that part of the graphics are replace with digits or other sprites, not poor RF connection.
  • It could be the game, have you tried another one? Open the console and give it a good clean, sometimes residue can short traces, also inspect the board closely for broken traces.
  • Sounds like the program is loading but not the graphics, I would blame the card edge connection. Disassemble the system completely, desoldering the shielding from the motherboard, and clean the contacts with an acid brush and 91% alcohol.
