HD CRT TV for retro games

I have seen mixed opinions online for HD CRT TV's online. Has anyone here used them? There is one available cheap locally and I am considering picking it.

I would be playing SNES and later consoles if that is of any help.

  • They're pretty much guaranteed to have an upscaler inside, which will add lag to virtually all older systems connected due to their output. I've heard of some where it's less noticeable, but they pretty much across the board share the characteristic of being incompatible with light guns of various systems because of the lag generated. If you can afford to lose the money involved in picking it up and transport it easily, I don't see any reason not to give it a shot as you can always get rid of it later on if you're unhappy with it. Just be aware of the potential drawbacks up front as your experience is unlikely to be 1:1 when compared to a traditional CRT.

HD CRTS would only be good for PS2/GC era and above.

SNES will look like crap on it. Almost as bad as on a regular LCD and also have all the same problems mentioned already.  Get a SD crt for that era (N64/PS1 and below).

  • Are you talking about wide screen CRTs with an HDMI port in the back?

If so, I had one for a few months. It was a cool TV because it worked really well some consoles that offered wide screen games, but didn't have HDMI outputs (mainly PS2, Xbox and Wii). I really enjoyed the TV, but light gun games didn't work on it, and I still preferred my regular CRT TV for games that output 240p. Ultimately, I decided that I would only keep the HD CRT if I was going to go with a 3 TV setup. Unfortunately I don't have the room for a 3 TV setup, so I decided to get rid of the HD CRT and stick with my regular CRT and my LCD HD TV for my 2 TV setup.

Also, that bastard weight nearly 200 lbs.
  • HD CRT for 240P= Sad Face

I think the unit is still 4:3. Judging by responses here it doesn't sound all that great for anything. Might as well run with my regular CRT and the OSSC.

If it's 4:3, then there is absolutely zero reason to get it.  As I said above, the only reason why an HD CRT would be useful would be for playing widescreen games on systems that didn't have HDMI output.

I've never seen a 4:3 HD CRT before.

  • I've got a Sony XBR 42" wide-screen CRT. It's great for systems that can output higher resolutions, but it's not going to be what you want for 240p content. Look for a PVM/BVM.
