Component Video is Black & White

This one has me puzzled.

A few years ago I bought a PC Engine Duo R.  I got a pretty good deal on it because it included an Arcade Card along with a six button pad.  It also included a component out mod.  I didn't care that much about the mod at the time.  In fact, I would have preferred that it didn't have the mod.  But for the price, I didn't care that much as long as the system worked with the original outputs.  For the past few years, I've been using it through composite video with no issues.  Recently, after getting my new switch box with extra component inputs, I've been working on getting as many of my systems running through component as possible.  I tried hooking up the Duo with component and I got a very green screen.  After reading about the pot adjustments on the component board, I adjusted everything until I had a proper color on my TV.  At this time, for testing purposes, I was running component from my Duo directly to the TV.

This is where my issues start.  Last night I tried to run the component through my Extron Matrix switcher.  When doing this, I'm getting a black and white image on my TV.  Everything else works fine.  All of my other component systems looked correct.  I also tried to change out differnet component cables including ones that I've confirmed work properly with other systems.  I also tried to run the Duo's component cables through different inputs on the switcher including the same inputs that I confirmed worked with my other systems.  I cannot understand why I'm getting a black and white image through my switch box when it works perfectly when plugged directly into the TV.

For the record, the following systems are running component through my switch box with no issues:
  • SNES
  • Wii
  • Master System
  • Genesis/CD/32x
  • Saturn
  • PS1
  • PS2
  • Xbox
  • Jaguar
The PC Engine Duo R is the only system giving me this issue, and only when running through the switch box. Any ideas?  Anything would be helpful.  I wish I had taken a picture of the component board when I was adjusting it, but I can take it apart again and take pictures if that helps.

Thanks for your help.

  • I cannot help you much but it would better to take a look at the board, or know who did the mod. I did once a component consolized Neo Geo MVS and realized 240p through component is a tricky thing, is your setup a modern HD TV or a CRT? I would think for some reason it's not properly detecting the input as component and instead it is detecting it as composite, I'm thinking maybe something about the video converter is slightly off-spec and the switch box accentuates the problem so the TV thinks it's getting composite instead of component. You've tried again connecting to the TV directly? Just to discard that something came loose while adjusting the pots.

    • I agree that the problem sounds like a component signal being recognized as a composite signal, but I still can't figure out why that would be happening only with the switch box
    • The mod was performed by the person who sold it to me.  I don't know the person and can't vouch for their modding skills.  As I said, the mod wasn't the reason I bought it, and I didn't pay extra for the mod considering I bought everything for below market value
    • There could certianly be an issue with the install, but even if that's the case, I would still be confused why it only happens while using the switch box
    • 32" Sony Trinitron TV
    • I've confirmed that the color works correctly when connected directly to the TV since adjusting the pots

  • When you can, take pictures of the video converter board, I am not familiar with the different boards that have been available over the years but somebody else might be able to recognize what kind of board was used and possibly what kind of problems it had and fixes that can be performed, there's a Facebook group called Retro Console Modders Mods And Repairs, you might want to try asking there, good luck!
  • Also another place to ask is in the pcenginefx forums
