Odd issues with Color Dreams cart

Picked up a copy of Captain Comic for NES this weekend and when I tried to get it working I encountered some problems I've never seen before.  I've cleaned the the contacts on the cart several times and I'm not sure exactly what's happening.  It does one of three things:

Powering on the console gives me the blinking light/flashing screen.  After a few blinks it turns to a solid white screen and light without resetting the console.

Powering on the console gives me a solid white screen and light that slowly dims and the system shuts itself off.

Powering on the console flashes white screen and immediately turns off.

As I said, I've never encountered this issue before.  Every other game I tested this weekend worked just fine and it's just this one cart.  And I'm using a front loader.  Anyone got advice for resolving this issue?

Comments

  • Anyone ever run into this issue? I'd love to play the game.
  • Nintendo revised the lockout chip a couple of times to thwart some of the earlier unlicensed games. Any other unlicensed games giving any issues?
  • I've got Deathbots and that works just fine. I think that's the only other one I own. Repros like Ultraman Club work on it as well? Not sure if that would cause an issue, too.
  • Very strange. Kinda scary that it just shuts off. Try it in another NES (namely a top loader if you have one) just to be sure it's not the cart itself.
  • I think I do have one but it's a front loader as well.
  • Color dreams games and several other unlicensed manufacturers used a special circuit to send a negative voltage spike into the lockout chip when powering on the console. It is possible that some of the transistors in the circuit have gone bad over time, or some other problem has occurred, meaning that the wrong level of voltage is being sent to the lockout chip. I would advise NOT using this game in your system again, as sending the wrong voltage to the wrong place could damage your NES.

If you could open up the cart and take pics of the board, maybe someone on here could help you diagnose the problem? I think you should really try and rule out this issue, before trying to test the cart again.
  • Good idea. I'll open it up tomorrow and post pics.
