How can I soften a STIFF Controller Cord?

in Help Wanted!
On the Beater Max controller that I modded for myself with the SNES D-Pad the cord is not very flexible and its very tough to handle, how can I soften this cord to make it more flexible?

    Use a heat gun very carefully.

    I've heard about people boiling stretched and stiff rubber belts to make them pliable and tight again. The cord may tolerate it but it may even make it worse if it boils out softening chemicals or something.

    I will just use the hair dryer a bit

    What I ended up doing was heating up a damp towel then I rung it out and ran the hot tower through the cord several times, I heated the towel again and did this untill the cord was now flexible again.
