Donkey Kong Jr Math CIB - with issue

Wondering what everyone thinks the price of this DK Jr Math CIB would be, for it's condition.  Clearly the glaring issue is it is missing it's hang tab, however the box overall is in very nice condition (not perfect, but not beat up at all and more crisp than the pictures may suggest), as is the manual/cart.

It's hard to gauge the price with previous sales since it is missing the hang tab but is in overall nice condition.  I understand the hang tab is an important component of it's condition, but it almost seems like it's more important than the box itself.  I've seen some sell in poor condition with the hang tab for higher prices than I'd expect.

Is simply having a hang tab more important than the condition of the actual box/graphics?

  • Without the hang tab it's not complete. I'd consider it heavily damaged, in fact. It's part of the box and the box is thus missing a big ol chunk off of it, so the rest of the box being in great condition is irrelevant IMO, to me I'd consider it borderline destroyed.
  • /\ Do you have a price in mind for what it is?  That's what I'm wondering.  Does borderline destroyed mean you wouldn't pay $5 for it?

Good point about it missing a chunk. What if the hang tab was perfect, but the chunk of the missing box was just part of the flap? So hang tab, graphics, all were nice. Same thing? You'd consider it destroyed?

Yup. To me a chunk is a chunk. Whether the market agrees I can't say, it's just how I feel about it personally.
  • If I had to hazard a guess at price I'd consider it low end of the spectrum, maybe $700 US? Still a nice chunk of change of course, and note that I may be well off. I'm sure someone else might be able to come in and speak to price specifically given a bit of time. I think there was another very similar conversation here just a few days ago, so maybe check the other price check posts for another like this. I would but I'm on the subway so internet is spotty at best.
  • $700 for box alone or cib?

CIB. Again, not an expert. Not sure how close or far I am from the mark.
  • My logic is this: I looked on PriceCharting, and checked the recent sales. Checked the currently available on ebay. Found that the cart is not worth THAT much by itself. So the main draw is the box/manual. Box is generally rarer than manual by a fair margin for most if not all games, so the CIB price is like 80% or more box. Double checked and the manual goes for about the same as the cart, so 80% of the price being the box seems about right. And this box is heavily damaged IMO, so I'd consider it a "bargain box". One for someone who wants to put it on the shelf and say they have it, but is perhaps not concerned at all about condition; it's a "nice to have". The box is also somewhat crushed, though otherwise fine, and I factored that in as well.

I'd say it's in the price range where I imagine most people who DO want this game CIB will put up the extra cash for one that still has the hangtab.

EDIT: Found the thread I was talking about: http://nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=29&threadid=181788

Different game, but similar situation. Estimates seemed to want to take around 30-40% off the price. Quote: "the hangtab kills it".
  • I also like the $700 range. The missing chunk is massive and it's not like the box is near mint otherwise. May go higher/lower depending on who's looking at the moment, but low end of the spectrum for sure.
  • You guys are probably right, I don't know as I don't track CIBs much, but the missing piece is a huge killer for me as well. 700 seems high to me, but others might be more forgiving of it.
  • It's obviously worth less without the hangtab but really it's such a common flaw for black box cibs and this is arguably the rarest box in the set. For that reason it doesn't seem fair to me to call this one destroyed. As a comparison my Clu Clu Land has major hangtab issues but it has never bothered me after owning it for 4+ years now.

DK Math prices tend to be all over the map and some people are saying $700 which is a good guess but it might surprise you how much this one's value could swing from that number (in either direction).
  • A big percentage of the potential buyers will pass and wait for a better one to come up so it's going to be very difficult to find a buyer unless you heavily discount it.

$700 seems extremly high to me, I'd put it more like $3-400 at most.
  • Good points and information by all, thanks. It's rare and a higher-dollar item, so you might think anyone wanting to pay that much would just wait for a more mint-ish copy. On the other hand it's rare, period.

I wish as a kid I would have carefully opened the box (or just figured it was a trash game and just put it in the closet and never opened it). It's NFS, but interesting to know regardless.
