Xbox 360 overheating almost instantly.

i brought my 360 out of retirement today, its been sitting in the closet for a while, and apon turning it on, it overheats almost 3 seconds into startup getting extremely loud before giving me a red half ring. I took the entire thing about cleaned all the heatsinks and fans, still no difference. I even left the metal case open in hopes of getting more air into it, nothing. any ideas?

  • I'd check the connection of the heatsink to the CPU. For the CPU to register as overheating within a few seconds tells me the heatsink might not be properly seated to the CPU.
  • Sure it isn't the regular red-ring that they are notorious for?
  • The notorious red ring of death is 3 flash red lights instead of 2
  • The number of lights blinking (and sub code) indicate what is exactly going on. 3RROD is easy to troubleshoot and fix. 2 is a little harder.

Watch some youtube videos, they will show you how to fix it.
  • seems like its overheating, or thats what it says. im gonna see what i can do when i take it apart further
  • Best of luck! Sadly, I don't think there's a permanent repair for the older 360s, just a temporary fix 'till it happens again. If it gets too complicated, save up and get either a "S" or an "E" system, they have way better ventilation.
  • I took it apart and cleaned every piece, then put it back together and its still overheating, the thermal paste seems to be dry so I'm going to order some and change it out.
