PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THERE IS ANYTHING THAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT THIS OR IF I SHOULD JUST LABEL IT AS "TOUGH LUCK".  THANKS TO ALL AND HAPPY COLLECTING!

  • Yeah, that's a toughie, whenever I have a bad deal I also think man I need to at least take a break or something. Your story does sound worst than most, but I think almost all of us have gotten at least one valuable game crushed in a bubble mailer, or bought a game that had unexplained label damages etc. $100 is still a huge deal, but hopefully that's not breaking the bank for you and maybe you just need a small break.
  • Very sorry, man; shame on UPS

What was the declared value on the customs form ?
  • waiiiiiiiiiit........ why did it even go through the US to get to Taiwan? Sounds weird to me being that it was shipped from Canada, I don't know why the US would even have their paws on a package not destined for here. I would contact Dov, being the cool guy that he is, maybe he will help you out.
  • Dude I feel your pain US Customs is the worst, but then again with recent events they probably have to be, trying to be somewhat understanding....

I go to Europe every other year and customs in all the other countries I've been too are pushovers compared to how crappy it is coming back HOME and getting back in USA. I remember coming back from Scotland with a sealed TIN of shortbread cookies as a gift for my parents. US customs made me open the gift wrap, then made me open the plastic wrap around the factory sealed cookies, then open up the tin and they took out the cookies and looked under the wrapper thingies that held the cookies in... sure wrecked that gift made it look like I was giving my parents leftovers. image

Then I bought a minty cart and book Rodland from a member here in the Netherlands. It got here with one of those inspected by US customs stickers and a huge slit in the package. To my horror the book was gone and the cart was snapped in half and had small holes drilled in the sides. Game never worked. Was just brutal experience.
  • US customs has nothing to do with this (technically they are now a part of homeland security). I do a lot of international shipping and can say that 99% of the time it is the customs dept of the destination country that is responsible for checking items entering that country (the country of origin doesnt care what goes out most of the time).

yes, i agree that it does suck. maybe the problem so many people are encountering is because the shipment's contents are being declared as gifts rather than more accurately categorized as collectibles.

Not quite ... Mexican customs opened a sealed Quadrun for Atari 2600 because the value was declared for $400 usd and the checked the inside of the product to confirm the contents and find out about the high value of that old game.
  • ive had a lot of sealed snes games come opened
  • Hey dumar. I actually emailed you earlier on today regarding this situation. I know, it's horrible, but yes, US customers (Department of Homeland Security) does infact have the authority to open up inspect anything that crosses their boarder!

So to answer the question of why did it reach the US if I'm shipping from Canada to Tawain? Most, if not all international shipments from North America, are sent to UPS's main facility in the US prior to it being shipped off to it's ultimate destination.
  • This really sucks.

Maybe you can try to get sealed games locally instead from abroad...

  • My experience with UPS has always been very very bad. I've asked sellers to ship with USPS instead of UPS and paid double the shipping just because of those experiences. This is another example that makes me think I should start putting notes in the package like this:

    Dear Customs Official,

Please understand that the contents of this package are valuable. I understand that your inspection maybe require intrusive observations. Please conduct your methods as respectfully as possible and please leave the contents in their original condition if possible. Thank you.

    Sincerely, Sender.

Anyone think that would go well, or piss off the inspector??
  • What horrible luck, I can't believe that they can just open them like that. Sorry man.
  • That sucks, fecking customs...

I know how it feels, it has happend to me too.

I would bet for every person that would even acknowledge it is in there and be careful that there would be another guy who would just enjoy ripping through your package even more than if the note weren't in there
  • That makes me image That's awful, man. You'd think they could just X-ray the contents or something.
  • thanks to all here and for your caring words to me, especially bighedkingpin and dov. very much appreciated! well, i can also sympathize with the members here that have also had a bad experience with customs or a bad seller. dov, being the gentleman that he is gave me a great deal on another snake's revenge, so that really softened the blow. hopefully this one makes it safe and sound.( what are the chances of this happening to the same person twice? knock on wood!) to my fellow games, i hope that you never see that customs sticker on your package when your games arrive. this hobby is the toughest hobby to get a handle on compared to all my other hobbies that i love or have loved in the past, action figures, statues, comics, cards, etc. it is especially tough on the newcomers. thanks again to everybody, i have learned much here and continue to learn more everyday because of this site and the great members of this site. and last but not least, i can't stress enough about how professional dov is, if you haven't bought from him yet, do yourself a big favor and buy from him, i can promise you that you won't be disappointed. thanks again.
  • hm... several thoughts why someone opened it:

    1) too high declared value

    2) outer box was damaged

    3) all\partially outgoing taiwan packages are being examined by the customs. It depends on the outgoing customs policy.

    4) ups is major uber shit. And yes, it is. Most express postal services has their own standards and also much lower customs declare values then the national ones. For example in russia, you need to pay VAT for parcels with declared value over 300$. But for Fedex it's about 100$ if i'm correct..
  • Dumar, thank you very much for your kind words. Greatly appreciate it! Glad I was able to help you as best as I could. Your items are being shipped out today by the way. Just finished packing them now.

Darksol, shipping an item from a foreign country into the US ALWAYS has to go through US customs, no matter how you ship it. Whether it's with Canada post, DHL, UPS, Fedex, etc. it always has the possibility of randomly getting stopped and checked. In this case, it was just unlucky.

After shipping over 2000 games this was the FIRST time (to my knowledge) that US customs has opened a game up. Hopefully (knock on wood) it will be the last!

    Dov
  • Dov, it's obvious that any parcel from country A to country B will go through the customs of country B. hehe..But this item was shipped from Canada to Taiwan, what USA has to do with it? Or UPS first sends it to US and then to elsewhere???

  • As quoted earlier:

So to answer the question of why did it reach the US if I'm shipping from Canada to Tawain? Most, if not all international shipments from North America, are sent to UPS's main facility in the US prior to it being shipped off to it's ultimate destination.

  • ^ This is true.
  • damn this is just ridiculous..What kind of express service is this if it travels between three countries image
  • This is why I'm a bit nervous to get any of my sealed games VGA graded.

There's no guaranty that the game will arrive to the VGA guys unopened...
  • ...No, really, I still want to know why they can't just X-ray the box at least BEFORE they open it, to see it's just a game.
  • You got me monkey. I agree. They probably don't want to spend the money on equipment and would rather just tramp all over peoples privacy.
  • darksol appreciate the positive plug ... ughhh i'm sorry to hear about that snake's revenge man ... you know when i sent you that message on ebay before i shipped (i'm thinking you bought sealed mickey mousecapade from me, but sometimes my memory is hazy) about hearing horror stories from sealed games being opened i never expected it to happen to you
  • those bastards need to Pay for that Item. IMO
