Public blue screen!

Ok this first post is just gonna be a quick one because I'm on the road with my family. Just saw this in a highway rest stop and it reminded me of the hilarious phenomenon of public bluescreens!

I don't know why I find these so funny... Something to do with the intersection of the mundane and the absurd with a little human folly/hubris mixed in, lol!

I'll update this thread later with some classics I found before online. In the meantime, if anyone else has pics of this phenomenon that they've either taken themselves or found somewhere please add them below!

  • I'm home! And I've tracked down some of my favourite public blue screens... enjoy!

And the most famous one of all, truly the pinnacle of the artform that is the public blue screen:

I did see another public bluescreen myself about 2 weeks ago. I wish I had taken a picture of it that time, cause it was on a roadside sign, it was amazing... I'm definitely going to be taking pictures and adding them to this topic if/when I see any more!

  • The one with the mannequins is great, true art.

  • we had a computer in a lab at school that bluescreened and stayed as a bluescreen for 3 days until I unplugged it.
  • The most infamous example may be when Bill Gates introduced Win 98 at COMDEX 1998 in front of a huge audience and newspaper reporters and the computer BSODed as it was loading device drivers. There's a few videos of it on youtube.

Yeah. If I recall correctly, they were connecting a USB scanner. Gates said something like "this is why it isn't released yet."

The 1999 South Park movie (Bigger, Longer, and Uncut) even had a parody/reference.

  • The funniest one I've seen was at a local bank, the front window display. They had a panel of 6-8 LCD displays that had scrolling text/images and after-hours the computer went bonkers.
  • I like seeing the BSOD vertically, reminds me of the Matrix movies. lol
  • On the bus heading back home, two and a half hour journey. After the first half hour was greeted with this, it'll last the whole way home, no watching tv for me, bah

  • Only one response that does these public BSOD's justice:

  • Just seen this huge screen on the side of a government building! Technically not a crash screen, I think they were just running some tests, but humourous nonetheless!
