I feel like Crash, Spyro, PaRappa, MMX4, RE2, and SOTN aren't here because they were recently re-released. And then it's missing Tomb Raider, Gran Turismo, and Silent Hill which are some of the most Playstation things on planet Earth.

I get siding out Silent Hill because we have a Resident Evil game already. The rest seem like they're probably missing for licensing/re-release reasons. This doesn't feel nearly as all-hits no-filler as the Nintendo consoles and it's premium priced.
  • Japan has G Darius. Japan wins.

Yeah, would definitely rather drop $100 on the PSP PSN
  • Haha this is almost entirely missing all of the games I grew up with in the 90s....so classic
  • It's a cute thing...all mini consoles are cute...but at $100 for a console that doesn't have Spyro, Crash or even Tomb Raider? NOPE.

Wonder how many people are canceling their pre-orders after the list was announced? I'm glad I passed on it. I wasn't feeling the price and we didn't have a game list at the time so I thought...wait for the game list. Glad I waited. I might grab it if it goes on a heavily discounted sale...like 50-70% off.
  • Sony seems to have fallen SOMEWHAT victim to it's own success here. The Playstation empire was built on the backs of a thousand licensees, and most of their top games and the games most synonymous with the system were made by someone else. This is obviously a far-cry from Nintendo, which always dominates the top games lists of its own systems.

However, Abe's Oddessy was one of my top picks and I am glad to see that on here! I am also pleased to see the inclusion of Rayman and GTA, and there are a few other titles that interest me here and there. Unfortunately, the absence of Crash, Spyro and/or Tomb Raider are BIG misses for me. That means I am still likely to get this, but I will not be going out of my way to do so. If it falls into my lap, I will scoop this up, but otherwise I can live without it.

    Bit of a shame, really.
  • I think it is going to be regularly available. A few places are still taking preorders.
  • Ima guess there's a Vol. 2 game expansion bundled with a Dual Shock controller on the way. They didn't want to blow the whole load on the stock library.

Still would've made more sense to have Symphony of the Night in the base software, and let’s not forget the importance of first impressions.

I'm pretty sure Sony already announced that they will not support the Classic beyond the release, which means no vol. 2 or dual shock.  I don't have a link for that, so maybe it wasn't an official statement by Sony, so I could be wrong.  It's too bad because I was originally hoping for something like what you said.

It's Sony, they can't resist the chance at releasing a PS Classic "Slim"

Figured there was a reason they bothered to model the parallel port cover when there were models without and a reason they used USB for the controller ports.   A Dual Shock USB controller could also be seen as a PC accessory. Perhaps they are playing word games.

  • We should be able to come up with a better list of 10 games for them....

I noticed that parallel port cover the day they announced it and I thought the same thing, so I'll still hope for the best, but I'm certainly not counting on it.  I agree 100% that a dual shock option down the road would be huge.

I thought about that as well.  I could see it happening, but to me, offering a dual shock controller down the road and/or the ability to add more games from Sony would make way more sense to me.

That would take the size and form factor of a Chromecast and have a cordless controller.

Doesn't get much slimmer than that.

You know, the more I read posts like yours here on NA and on other places, I'm beginning to think that the PS Classic might be doomed by the success of the original console.  I mentioned it earlier, but the PS1 had such a high ratio of quality, excellent titles that even with a rock star line-up of 20 games, practically everyone is going to think "well, that looks nice but I personally wish it had a few more games that I was into back then."

My personal PS1 library was the largest of all game consoles from my childhood and it was definitely the console I logged the most hours on.  It was just awesome and games managed to get cheap rather quickly and I really enjoyed most of them.  When we all have a personal "Top 25 of best PS1 games" it's hard to make a list of "Top 20" that will make a lot of nostagia gamers buy your system.  There are just to many good games to choose from and we're all bummed that the list doesn't come close to our personal, top favorites.  Basically, we all see 1-3 games on this list we like and the rest are titles we felt were ok, or never played because who had time to play 200, grade A games when this thing was period relavent?

IMO I agree to an extent, but i think the bigger issue is that the best games on the system were not made by Sony. That means they have no rights to a large chunk of the games that people grew up with and would want on this thing. The most familiar PS faces and series, Crash, Spyro, TR, SOTN all come to mind but the list is far longer than that.

While i do agree a lot of people have different top 20's. I think there are a lot of "safe" titles that almost anyone would want to see on here, especially the mascots that sold the system way back when. But Sony doesn't own the rights to a lot of them. It would be like trying to have a N64 classic but Nintendo no longer owned Mario or Zelda. The N64 classic would sell with just first party mario/zelda titles alone. It is definitely a much tougher classic to put together in that sense, so with that all said, while i won't be buying it, i don't think the game list is bad by any means.

The NES and SNES are the same deal..  They just have more games like Tekken 3 and Metal Gear solid that are games that are probably standouts for basically everybody who loves the system.

There were lots of good titles that were originally on the PS1, but there is definately a limited number that I actually miss having a PS1 around to play... I had to kinda scape the bottom since there is a lot that have been rereleased or have indisputably better versions easily available.

That was my thoughts exactly, I think it was rough for them to get all the pieces there to really put the titles together and come out with a product that really encapsulates what made the Playstation 1 so awesome and revolutionary at the time.

Very true, basically everywhere I am reading about this I am seeing the exact same thing. And the funny thing is, as you say, everyone is complaining about the lack of different games! So some people are complaining because no GT or wipeout, some are complaing about not having silent hill and SOTN, others are complaining about the derth of JRPGS. And almost everyone is like, where the f are Crash and Spyro, lol!

When we had the NES classic, the main complaints were that we got Super C instead of Contra, and Tecmo Bowl instead of Tecmo Super Bowl. I don't even think anyone was complaining much about the SNES classic lineup, apart from lack of many multiplayer games... Nintendo definitely seems to have a much tighter package to deliver its fans, although how they navigate the Rareware issue on the N64 mini DOES remain to be seen...

  • I have one on preorder...I'll go ahead and keep it because we all know the hacking community will blow this thing out of the water just like they did the NES/SNES Classic...
  • I think the only solution for Sony to make everyone happy would be to increase the game count to 50 games. Then you hit a little bit of everyone's sweet spot

Even with 50 games people would still find an excuse to bitch.  The only option is to go with 1,284 games.

Here's an interesting but pointless exercise-- assuming they did make such a device, what would the price point have to be for that to be profitable?  The big expense wouldn't be the space to hold the games but the licensing fees for all of that old software. So, how much would they have to sell a device like that to maintain worthwhile profits (assuming they'd have a million units sold, just to keep the math easy.)

I'm actually more curious about how much space would be needed to fit all 1,284 US titles.

I mean IDK, i think that is exaggerating a bit lol Even with 30 games this could have been far better IMO. 20 is just a bit on the small side and not unreasonable to not make everyone happy.

Even then the licenses are the real issue and omitting key franchises. Rather than the number of games IMO.

Supposedly the average game is 150 MB, though that sounds awfully low to me.

So on the low end: 192,600 MB or about 188 GB.

If you figure in all the multi-disc games, and figure that music is redundant, so really the average might be a full disc per game, then that is about 650 MB per game.

Or on the high end: 834,600 MB or about 815 GB

So you're talking about $100 just for the storage space on a device like that, before you ever get into the licensing or the actual gaming hardware.
