100$ For the "playstation classic" as a stand alone, "greatest hits" all in one console? HARD PASS.

Maybe at 60-70$ in the state it is released in.

Exactly. This is priced higher than the rest while being a lower quality product. Not much to defend. It may be an alright product but it is not a good value.

Exactly - I don't think anyone is arguing that it's the product of the year or an amazing value.  It is what it is, really cool concept that certainly could have been done better - and I can't argue that $100 feels a bit high for what we get for it, but it certainly could be worse it's got some solid titles and save states.

I guess im use to looking super forward to things and being let down lol, (bought a ps4 just for silent hills) and all of the early access games ive backed. Its just this system isnt the worst thing ive ever seen. It seems like theres quite a bandwagon to be upset about it.

  • Sony: You're saying that we did a bad job putting this PS1 classic together?

Bruce Willis: I'm not saying they did a bad job I'm saying they did a piss poor job.

Are you seriously telling me that this is the best Sony, Sony can do??  I mean for crying out loud they're electronic geniuses!  They gave us not one but FOUR Playstations and all those VCRs and stereos and what not and you're telling me that this $100 not-even-worth-being-a-paperweight is the best they can do???

  • I've got to say, I am quite enjoying watching scalpers try and sell them.

Is that really happening? I feel like you'd need to be totally blind to consider this a good investment as a reseller with all the negative media surrounding it.

Even big name companies have bench warmers that need projects from time to time.

I'd say it's ESPECIALLY a concern with big name companies, given their size and the likelihood that they're carrying dead weight.

Some young aspiring product manager too this project on as his first major outing and got overwhelmed, would be my guess, and was probably given the C-team from staffing to work with, to boot.

Yup. Have already seen them listed on Mercari and a few other places for $175+

The problem with the game selection is that there are at least 100 other games that would be better choices than most of the ones they chose. It might be a complete failure but it's like they were aiming for mediocrity, and they hit that mark perfectly. They should have been aiming for a collection of masterpieces and they could have but decided not to for whatever reason.

100 other games that either A: Require dual analog control (or are extremely handicapped without) or B: Are licensing nightmares. (ex: Gran Turismo, thps)

there's no excuse for the PAL versions of games on this thing, but the game list is severely handicapped by the lack of analog control. Which is what the playstation originally was.

Eh, I completely disagree regarding your first point. The PS1 was fine without, and literally every game except for one (Ape Escape) didn't REQUIRE analog. My memories of playing PS1 don't all have me pining for analog, and PS1 was and is still one of my main consoles that I play/ed on.

Have you ever played Gran Turismo 2 without analog?  It is horrendous compared to having analog to where it might as well be required.

I can't imagine that is the only game that massively benefits from it.

  • This speaks volumes, the fact I can order one from EBgames just goes to show how little interest people have.

Would have never been able to get one this close to launch for the NES/SNES Classics.

  • Even if the interest had been much higher, I can still guarantee that these would have been much easier to get compared to the NES or SNES Classic. Sony is a little better at that compared to Nintendo.

Or he'll eat a live chicken.

  • $99 for a shitty PS1 emulator, 5 games are good on it, choppy play, no Dual shock............. no thanks. you more than likely can get a PS1 with controllers and the 5 good games for about the same price if not cheaper. and itll be way better. i just picked up a PS1, 2 memory cards, and 2 dual shock controllers for $7 at goodwill.
  • also, i really cant believe they left off any Gran Turismo.

    Yeah this thing SUCKS

  • There are a couple on kijiji... haha... good luck with that.
  • To provide a hands-on update, I finally finished my school and give my system a whirl. I found the system runs solid, I didn't notice any glitches or anything, but the PAL games definitely have lag. Was hoping it wouldn't be THAT bad, but it is  .

For the US games, they seemed to play well on my 4K screen - but the visuals are what you'd expect from PS1 (they didn't hold up well). Metal Gear Solid played nice and Twisted Metal was it's same old clunky self.

I really like the automated save state feature, but is not nearly as robust as the SNES/NES classic as it's automated and seems to just save where you leave off every time you hit reset.

The controllers felt good and it's funny that they have a USB port sticking out the end, I originally thought it was actually a PS1 style connector on the console end.

At the end of the day, it does exactly what it says it will do - but the PAL games truly are a killer. I can live with everything else.

If the hackers figure out a way to open this up to add our own roms soon, I'll keep it, otherwise it will be returned to best buy.

I still see a lot of people buying these as gifts over the holidays, but I eat crow with any other defense I pushed onto this system. Pretty shocked Sony released this with PAL titles.
  • My experience has been the same as Boosted. I'm slightly more apt to keep it as my primary goal was simply to have a tiny ps1, I like the novelty of it. But we'll see.
  • Yeah I feel bad for you guys who got suckered into it. Unless you really do love the thing and feel it is worth $100, then to each their own.

But the warning signs were here from the second the 5 game list came out with the $100 price tag. $50-$60 range is about the limit of impulse buying, $70-$80 gets people really assessing what they are buying and $100+ is only for diehards.
  • I will say, I've seen more TV ads for this than I saw for the NES or SNES classics combined. Maybe the price tag is to cover what they dished out for marketing?...
  • At this point i am just curious what hackers will be able to do for this thing. I am sure some new roms can be switched out, maybe the storage expanded, and hopefully maybe optimized in the emulator to run better.

Since it just takes a USB, and the emulator supports Dual Analog, i wonder if you could use third party USB dualshocks.
  • If Toxie says it sucks, well then guess what? It SUCKS
  • I guess you can plug a keyboard in to it, hit ESC and bring up the emulator menu and change the regions to NTSC. So, that's something, I guess?

I don't think that makes sense though. You can't just change a PAL ps1 rom to NTSC IIRC, there are actual different rom files for each region. Changing the region in the menu isn't going to change the rom itself to NTSC.

Can anyone confirm this fixes things? If it does, then i am honestly in awe that Sony chose to put the 50hz versions stock with such an easy option to change it to the correct 60hz NTSC format.....

I’m not an expert in PlayStation ISOs, so I cant say now it works at all, but:

Yeah it is forcing the Pal 50hz rom to run at 60hz, which is not a good thing. That IGN employee doesn't quite understand what is happening when he is changing that setting. Can work for some games but can also cause audio and graphical glitches for many others. You can't just choose which region for PS1 ISO's without any consequences as they are totally different ISO's. They either need to be patched or just use the 60hz NTSC.

And if the machine is hacked, which it likely will be, you are better off just putting the actual NTSC ISO's on there.
  • Well I returned mine . Told the GameStop employee to let me know when it's in the bargain bin and I'll think about getting it lol
  • Was curious to try out some of the games included - I wasn't much of a PS1 player aside from Triple Play 2000 and Twisted Metal 2, so I hadn't played many of the included games before. Plus, I like the mini-console idea as they are more interesting than a compilation disc, and they are convenient to quickly swap between games.

Including the PAL ROMs is just baffling. It's either an embarrassing fuck up or an indefensible idea. So I'll be returning mine and will check out some PS One Classics off the PSN store, which I understand are solid versions to play. Disappointing, but life goes on.
