  • I haven't read anything in this thread and I know I'm late to the game but such an underwhelming list. Why in the world is there no Spyro or Crash games? People say they remade them recently, yeah sure. But if the NES classic didn't have Super Mario Bros. on it because it was re-made on Mario All-Stars or re-made on Gameboy Color or the Classic Series for GBA or you can buy it on the e-shop or whatever... it's the Nintendo Classic. F'ing of course put Super Mario Bros. on there. For the PS Classic to not have Spyro or Crash it's silly.
  • ^ Well these were very recent currently on the market remakes, I would assume that is why. Still on the fence about returning mine, I guess the hacking is making some huge strides - I haven't followed in a few days but they already found semi-complicated ways to add additional roms to the system etc.

    Activision dosnt like splitting profits
  • The only angle I could see is that they feel it might not add any leverage to it because people may have recently played Crash and Spyro via the remasters.

Boy would they be wrong though.
  • Any good hacking articles on this yet?

I'm out shopping so can't pull any articles up, but I can confirm that it is stupid easy to hack games onto it, as well as to change settings to fix the stupid PAL bullshit.

The hacks are all soft mods, too, so incredibly safe. You can easily factory reset it if need be.

You can inject games into it via USB. You have to edit the text manually but seems safe and easy. Hopefully a hikichi style pre-loader and other goodies are on the way.
  • Amazon had it listed for $75 already and a $25 gift card.

I believe a few other stores are also giving away $25 gift cards.

This thing will be very cheap after the holidays
  • I don't know how many here have actually bought one and used it, but despite all the issues discussed here and elsewhere, I'm still decently happy with it. It looks great next to my other ones, and while perhaps a bit high for a novelty type item such as this, I'm still pleased.

One thing I like is that the controllers are USB so you can use generic USB extension cables (which I already had tons of). It's not for everyone and that's fine. I'm pretty happy with the quirky selection of games, and I had fun playing some Wild Arms and Intelligent Qube last night on it.

If it gets super cheap in the future, I would still recommend it to some despite all the issues.
  • As I said before, I'm definitely still getting one. The $25 price drop was nice, but as quickly as it hit, I will probably wait for one more drop. I heard about the $25 gift card along with the $75 price, but I haven't actually see that yet. For that deal, I would probably bite assuming the gift card can be used on basically anything (like Amazon).
  • So how much internal memory did the device turn out to have, for hacking purposes?

It includes 16 GB of ECC flash storage and 1 GB of DDR3 memory.

Wow, that is way more than I expected.

Only around 700mb is unused though.  Would likely involve flashing the card and running CFW to get the stock games off that to free up more memory if they aren't kept in partition.  Not hearing much about CFW yet, most just want to inject more/different games into the system.

Current method involves overmounting by using a usb drive in the second port.  The games are loaded directly from the usb thumb drive without changes to the system's memory.

So size is really limited by the size of your usb drive.  Larger cards may load slower though and there is 100 icon limit based on the stock UI.

Yeah, given the size of ISOs for the number of games they listed, I figured they were going to run a thin margin.

Guess I'm a little surprised it sounds like they must have done straight ISOs (and all the repeat content that includes, per disc) rather than figuring out a way to compress things.

Bare minimum is the name of the game, bois.

    No doubt.

Guess my knee-jerk was just being a little surprised that 16 GB memory chips were the cheaper option than a device that used file compression on the ISOs.

(though, the trade there is probably that RAM is way more expensive that storage chips, and they'd probably need more than 1GB to make it work with compression)

Amazon still has the $25 gift card option up right now on the website and it can be used on anything on the site. They are just out of stock. Likely was a way to dump a good portion of them as they knew the full price would be a hard sell, and it seems to have worked.

Strange, I was never able to view the listing with a gift card, and I check multiple times over the weekend including this morning.

Yeah IDK. It has looked like this for me and still does. Maybe you missed it cause it is so small.

  • OK, now I see it, which means I probably missed it when I had a chance over the weekend. Now there aren't any for less then $94 and that's more than I'm going to pay right now. Oh well. I'll keep my eye on it.

Wait, what?  On page one you said this is the first classic edition that you "truly want to own", but you still haven't bought one?

My whole argument in this entire thread, from day 1, was that this thing wasn't going to have $100 of value.  You kept saying wait for the games and people knew they weren't going to magically announce nothing but studs at the end.

And at the end of the day, you decided that despite really wanting to own it, it is just overpriced anyway.  Thanks for agreeing with me.

So when an argument isn't going your way, do you always change the other person's words to fit your argument, or is this the first time?

Unfortunately for you, that isn't what I said.  I said I wasn't going to pay $100 for it because it seems pretty clear that these will be marked down very quickly.  Even if they had been executed better, I still would have waited because it was pretty clear that they were going to be available in much larger numbers, and that means plenty of leftovers to get at discounted prices.  In about 3 weeks, the NES and SNES Classics are going to be marked down to peanuts at Wal-Mart and Target.  If I had known that 1 and 2 years ago, I would have waited on those as well.  I didn't wait because, at the time, it seemed possible that I would never have a chance to get them for less than MSRP.  The NES and SNES Classics were well worth their asking price, but I never would have bought one if I knew that they would eventually be marked down.

I argued with you about the $100 asking price being reasonable because it WAS reasonable.  At that time, the only argument against the aksing price was the game lineup, but there is nothing wrong with the game lineup save for one questionable game (which is technically better than I can say for the NES Classic lineup).  If I was in a situation where I would never have a chance to a PS1 Classic for less than $100, I would have bought it at launch.  I argued in favor of the game lineup because people were bitching with very little reason to bitch.  Unfortunately, we found out later that Sony didn't execute the system very well.  I didn't defend Sony's choice to use PAL ROMs, because this was a legitimate reason to complain.  I call it like I see it (an advantage of not being a fan boy).

But anyway, thanks for putting words in my mouth.  I always love it when people take time out of their day to alter another person's words to help them save face.  Merry Christmas.

There's your words, I don't have to put any in your mouth.  It's pretty clear as day you don't think this thing is worth $100 and I thought it was never worth $100 either.  I'm sorry you're so offended or blindly alligent to Sony? I'm not, and I call a spade a spade.  Cash grab from day 1, called it and nailed it from the get-go.
  • Read everything I said. If you select only the parts of what I said that fit into your narrative, that's no different than changing the words. I don't care if you want to be a Nintendo fan boy. This is a good website for it. But if you are going to bitch about something just to bitch about it, you are going to get called out. Learn to live with it.

Wonder how many of these are going to be returned after Christmas?

Yup, they cut off the gift card today it seems. But restocked and still listed at $75. I wonder how low they would price drop this thing....

Not many, coz a lot of parents don't keep the receipts!

But, seriously, I took a picture from my phone but I saw on OfferUp a scalper had one for $400... I nearly fell out of my chair laughing.  Of course, this joker will just return it and get his money back, but still pointed and had a hearty laugh.
