Help me recover old episodes of My Retro Life!

***Update 6: Thanks again to everyone who helped me track down the series. Tyler's teaming up with Pixel Game Squad (TheNESPursuit guys) to re-launch the series on their channel starting next tuesday, 12/18. This wouldn't have been possible without everyone's help :-)

***Update 5: WOW! Thanks to a very generous user of a private video sharing site, I now have every episode of My Retro Life except the very first one, Master System Birthday 1994. I'm still not publishing these for the time being per my discussion with Tyler, but I wouldn't be surprised if they show up at some point in the not-too-distant future! Please don't read into that; I'm not in a decision-making position and really don't know what he's ultimately going to decide. The point is, he has backups of the show now when he didn't before, and if he wants to put them back up or have someone else do it, he will

**Update 4: Thanks to the help of a mega fan from the Sega Channel days, I've now tracked down 21.5 out of 29 episodes of "My Retro Life," in addition to 20+ other videos from iretrogamer. I say 21.5 and not 22 because, even though the 22nd episode is *complete*, the audio has been overdubbed in Russian (i.e. there is a Russian narrator speaking over every line in the video; the original soundtrack is still audible beneath the narrator, but just barely.) We're getting close! If you've got any of the 8 episodes listed below, please get in touch!

**Update 3: After some further discussion with Tyler, I’ve taken the new YouTube channel offline for the time being. However, I am still looking for the missing episodes in bold below, which I will be sending directly to Tyler since he doesn’t have any backups. If you’ve got them, please share! And who knows... maybe they’ll go back up online some day if he decides to put them up. He knows how much they mean to a lot of people, so I wouldn't count on them necessarily being offline forever.

Meanwhile, everything I uploaded to the channel minus one non-"My Retro Life" video I found over the weekend is available in aggregate here:

  • I don't have any, but thanks for the heads up about the channel. I saw the video where he talked about taking a break to spend more time with his family etc., but didn't realize that he'd updated that to just totally quitting and deleting the channel entirely. It will be missed.
  • Ah man, I didn't know his hiatus meant closing his whole channel...

Good luck, hope these videos turn up somehow as they are great.
  • I have never seen that channel but it sounds pretty cool. Is there any way to access any of his videos at this point for someone who has never seen them?
  • What on earth was the "great" reason?! Are his parents relocated witness protection program and he never knew?

Yep, just do a Google search for any of the videos I listed in the first post (except the Ghostbusters one; that’s still up on the iretrogamer Facebook page but I believe it’s scheduled for deletion and so will be gone as of tomorrow.)

His stuff really got me in the feels, as his dad did a lot of the same stuff with him that mine did, but we didn't have a video camera to document everything, so...

He apparently realized during the first bit of his hiatus how much he was missing in his family life by dedicating himself so much to the channel that he ultimately decided to just delete it all.  The stated reason behind it (he apparently made a "public" statement on his Patreon and let a YouTuber friend read it on their channel) was that while he initially meant to put it on the back burner, he knew that it would always be there and always be something he would want to go back to and work on 100% and that doing so would be somewhat like a sobered alcoholic falling off the wagon, leading to him missing out on his family, possibly neglecting them, etc.  I can understand where he was coming from and appreciate why he did what he did, but I still can't help wishing that he'd made everything available on DVD or such beforehand.  I know that pokes holes in his intention to delete the channels and all copies of everything so he can't go back to it versus dedicating himself 100% to spending time with his wife and daughter, but there was some really great stuff that he did that's now potentially gone forever.

Does it matter? It's his choice

It just seems stupid to me I guess, a hair trigger reaction, to put all of that work into it, the editing, the voiceover work, simply the fact that the footage itself is priceless and contains footage of things seemingly nobody else captured. I mean once you put your work out into the world like that, and get such a positive response, it's kind of a dick move to just yank it all away. Yeah, I understand it happens, great stuff vanishes from Youtube all of the time, it's just a shame that a user like that could be so well aware of what he has, and still wipe it all. He could have just made his password and login something random and not copied down the information, locked himself out of his own account, and he would have achieved the same thing.

Deleting what was essentially a tribute to your real family (parents) seems like a really odd reason to complain that you aren't getting enough time with your (legal contract) family? It's always some woman behind this type of crap! Your internet following ALWAYS comes before family, dammit!

  • Sigh. Can we please keep the negativity out of this thread? Tyler’s reasons for deleting the channel are his own and were most definitely not made lightly. We can lament the deletion of the channel without disparaging his choices.
  • Alright, sorry my genuine opinions are viewed as 'negative'.

If you’re genuinely curious, google “What happened to iretrogamer.” It’s all spelled out there... and it’s all about him being the best father he can be, just like his dad was for him. As someone whose first child is due next month, I’m totally behind that. I still want the videos, though :-)

  • I speak from experience, was very successful in the early days of Youtube, started in 06. Probably had 5000 subscribers by the end of 2008. Just like him, my name is Tyler, I'm an only child, my channel was all about VHS rips. It took me hundreds of hours too, back in those days you couldn't go over ten minutes, and you had to resync your audio properly which took twice as long as it does these days. I know Youtube can drain you. So I don't think me and this guy are too different whatsoever, I kind of feel like I'm a bit inside his mind. I've been there. I know what it's like to let your family pass you by a bit. But honestly, the joy you get from sharing experiences with all the commenters, that is not something that you can get in everyday life. People need to be able to find a balance with their family. If the internet is like an actual drug for you, that's pretty crazy to me. My channel was permanently removed at the end of 2009 for three strikes copyright. Almost ten years later, I still miss my channel a lot. By the time it was deleted, my hard drive had become corrupted, and it became hundreds of hours down the drain. Deleting the channel is even more wasteful in my eyes, because you can't change the past. It's already time spent. So why delete all the work you put into it? I mean, life is crazy. You could be hit by a car and killed next week, life has no guarantees. Why delete a well established internet legacy that has become even bigger than you, the uploader? It's just a shame that a lot of people never even saw his great videos, like others have said, they are worthy of being displayed in a museum of some sort!
  • Wow, I've never heard of this show, but now I'm intrigued to watch it! I wonder if anyone will mirror the episodes on another channel or site entirely?

There are still a handful of episodes out there. Just do a Google search for "My Retro Life Retroware" and you'll find six of them mirrored on the Retroware YouTube channel. Enjoy!

  • Update! I've found six more episodes via zenither.com and have added links to the post. Also, here's a link to my tribute to my own deceased parent, Mother 3: Analysis and Memory, which I mention in the OP. Miss you, mom

  • Ah man I loved his videos. I'll do some searching too!
  • If you want to quit making youtube videos, just quit. But to burn down all your past work seems wasteful. Especially when there are people who are still interested in seeing it.
  • Seems kinda scummy to upload a bunch of videos you didn't make that the creator took down for a reason.
  • I think you should really get the guy's blessing on re-uploading these rather than treating the absence of complaining as permission. It's one thing to download or share privately because you like them, but re-uploading content you don't own that the creator doesn't want out there is a bit of a dick move.

He took them down for a reason. Whether or not you agree with that reason is irrelevant.

You have valid points, which is why I’m still undecided on what to do. I can only add: this exact same thing happened with Retro Liberty, where fans uploaded the entire series after the channel was suddenly deleted... and two years later, when NES Pursuit returned, they were grateful that fans had saved the show when they had not (Tyler was one of those fans, by the way—he’s been in almost all of the weekly NES Pursuit livestreams.) But again, I’m still thinking about it. The reasons for deleting the two channels (Retroliberty and iretrogamer) were very similar, but they’re obviously different situations.

At the very least, I know he was okay leaving what was out there at Retroware out there, and he probably completely forgot he uploaded the videos to the other platform I link to above.

Thanks for the comments. I'm doing this out of love, obviously, and wouldn't want to cause him any grief. I’ve reached out to a friend of his and will hold off on re-uploading anything until I hear back.

Thanks! And just to be clear for anyone who's wondering: it's only the ones I've found; as far as I know, he doesn't have the edited files any more (he still has the tapes, of course). So I'm still looking for help finding the remaining episodes ~55% of the show. If anyone has them, please forward links along to me (or DM me for other contact info); when I upload them, I need to make sure they're clearly attributed to him.

  • What a wild ride! The channel is down for now, but I'm still looking for the missing episodes to send to Tyler since he doesn't have backups. If you have any, please send them my way!
  • What a bummer! That was definitely one of the best YouTube channels - always hit me in the feels as they say...keep up the search!
  • What happened to the backup channel? I remember watching one of his videos before and I thought it was really cool, was hoping to watch some of the other episodes backed up.

I had some further discussion with Tyler today and he asked me to hold off for now, simple as that, so I made the channel dark. However, you can still find all of the currently available remaining episodes (that aren't up on Retroware's YouTube channel) right here:

    https://zenither.tv/megaexplode/iretrogamer

Meanwhile, I will continue looking for the remaining missing episodes (I'm still trying to help him locate them since he doesn't have any other backups), and if I find them in places I can link to, I'll update the post! Sorry for the up-and-down...ness of the whole thing. I put quite a bit of energy into this pursuit over the weekend but I'm gonna keep working to get it right so that if and when Tyler decides to put them back out there again, he can do it on his terms
